Job Identification

The Fleet Maintenance Manager is responsible for planning, directing, and overseeing all maintenance operations for the company's ready-mix concrete fleet, including front and rear discharge mixer trucks, tractor-trailers, dump trucks, loaders, and support equipment. This position ensures fleet safety, reliability, regulatory compliance, and maximum equipment availability through effective preventive maintenance, technician leadership, budget management, and collaboration with operations to support safe, on-time customer deliveries.


Description

  • Manage all maintenance operations for a ready-mix concrete fleet, including mixer trucks, tractor-trailers, dump trucks, loaders, and other mobile equipment, to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient fleet performance.
  • Ability and willingness to travel throughout the company's operating footprint as needed to support fleet maintenance operations.
  • Develop, implement, and oversee preventive maintenance and repair programs to maximize equipment uptime and extend asset life.
  • Plan, prioritize, and assign daily maintenance activities based on operational needs, production schedules, and equipment availability.
  • Oversee, mentor, and develop fleet technicians by providing technical guidance, performance coaching, and ongoing training.
  • Diagnose and oversee the repair of mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, and engine systems using OEM diagnostic software and specialized testing equipment.
  • Ensure all maintenance, inspections, repairs, and documentation comply with DOT, FMCSA, OSHA, environmental, and company safety standards.
  • Manage emergency roadside service, equipment breakdowns, and repair scheduling to minimize operational downtime and maintain delivery commitments.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance records, work orders, inspection reports, and fleet performance data using computerized fleet maintenance management systems.
  • Manage shop operations, including parts inventory, tooling, equipment, vendor relationships, warranty administration, and procurement of parts and supplies.
  • Monitor maintenance budgets, equipment performance, and key performance indicators (KPIs) to improve fleet reliability, control costs, and support continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Maintain a safe, organized work environment by conducting safety inspections, enforcing company policies, and ensuring proper use of shop equipment and personal protective equipment.
  • Oversee national accounts with vendors and suppliers.

Additional Expectations

  • Able to work flexible hours and shifts and be reliable and punctual. The employee must also be willing and able to work long hours up to the maximum hours allowed of services permitted by DOT and state law, including but not limited to, Saturday, Sunday, and holidays.
  • Maintain driving record in accordance with Federal and State Motor Carrier regulations and company policy.

Physical Demands

  • Lift 80 pounds, including but not limited to lift chutes and other related CMV/job related items.
  • Able to regularly climb heights of up to 13 feet on a ready-mix truck, using the truck steps and ladder, work on a truck catwalk at an elevated height, in a ready-mix truck you must step down into the truck cab.
  • May be required to climb ladders and catwalks that may be between 6-110 feet above the ground.
  • Ability to climb, balance, kneel, crouch, crawl, and be in confined spaces.

Environmental Conditions

  • Must be able to tolerate, with or without accommodation:
  • Exposure to extreme weather conditions
  • High noise levels and significant vibrations associated with construction equipment and overall job site activities
  • Walking and working of varied rough terrain conditions
  • May be exposed to construction related chemicals, this environment can include, but is not limited to, dust and other typical industrial conditions.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum of five (5) years of fleet maintenance management or supervisory experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience maintaining ready-mix concrete fleets, with specific expertise in front discharge mixer trucks required.
  • ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) certifications preferred, or the ability and willingness to obtain certification within a designated timeframe.
  • Valid State-Issued Class A or B Commercial Driver's License
  • Candidates must be willing and able to undergo a pre-employment background check, MVR overview, physical/DOT and drug/alcohol testing. Ongoing compliance is required.
  • Proficiently read, write, and speak English
  • Ability to understand and read GPS from company issued tablet
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with internal and external stakeholders, including:
  • Management, supervisors, and peers
  • People at various social levels
  • Demonstrate the ability to perform job functions in accordance with Company policies and management directives, including adherence to personal appearance standards, safety protocols, and P.P.E. requirements, while promptly reporting any unsafe conditions, accidents, or incidents to your direct report.
  • Must be able to take orders, instructions and guidance from management and supervisors.
  • Proficient basic math skills, e.g. addition, subtraction, fractions, and percentages 
  • Maintain driving record in accordance with Federal and State Motor Carrier regulations and company policy.
  • Required to have an active phone with texting or email capabilities to ensure reliable communication during work hours (Note: Usage must comply with the Ernst Cell Phone Policy, Federal, & State regulations and may not interfere with safe operation of company vehicles).
  • Proven safe driving record
  • No unexplained gaps in employment
  • Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, and being able to type proficiently on a desktop computer keyboard.
  • Knowledgeable in the safety requirements and OSHA standards for running all areas of responsibility within the concrete plant and all operations-related equipment and activities.
  • Communicate with customers, employees, vendors, suppliers and the public in a diplomatic manner in various stressful and challenging situations.
  • Perform all tasks within the Ernst safety requirements, policies, and guidelines as well as OSHA and state and federal regulatory requirements.
