Job description

Overview:
The Fixed Income Trader I supports the execution and management of fixed income investment transactions across a variety of markets and asset classes. This role works closely with senior traders, portfolio managers, analysts, and operations personnel to facilitate efficient trade execution, monitor market activity, and provide market intelligence to the investment team. The successful candidate will develop expertise in fixed income securities, trading platforms, market structure, and regulatory requirements while contributing to the investment process.
Primary Responsibilities:
  • Execute fixed income transactions in accordance with established investment guidelines, trading policies, and best execution standards under the supervision of senior trading personnel.
  • Monitor market conditions, interest rate movements, credit developments, and trading activity to identify relevant trends and opportunities.
  • Communicate trade information accurately and timely with brokers, portfolio managers, compliance personnel, and operations teams to ensure efficient trade processing and settlement.
  • Support portfolio managers by providing market updates, security information, pricing information, and liquidity analysis.
  • Assist with portfolio construction efforts by gathering and analyzing fixed income market data and investment opportunities.
  • Develop and maintain working relationships with broker-dealers, trading counterparties, and internal stakeholders.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable regulatory requirements, firm policies, risk controls, and trading procedures.
  • Identify operational, compliance, or market-related issues and escalate concerns appropriately.
  • Support client presentations, investment committee materials, and market commentary by providing trading and market insights.
  • Contribute to a collaborative and inclusive team environment that reflects the values and standards of M&T Bank and Wilmington Trust.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development and training programs to strengthen fixed income market knowledge and trading skills.
  • Perform additional duties and special projects as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Basic understanding of fixed income markets, securities, and investment concepts.
  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Ability to interpret market data and communicate findings effectively.
  • Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Strong verbal and written communication abilities.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and other financial applications.
  • Familiarity with Bloomberg, MarketAxess, Tradeweb, or similar trading and analytical platforms is preferred.

Education and Experience Required:
Bachelor's degree and a minimum of 2 years experience in the financial services industry; in lieu of a degree, a combined minimum of 6 years' higher education and/or work experience, including a minimum of 2 years' financial services and or fixed income trade experience.
Education and Experience Preferred:
  • Exposure to asset management, capital markets and fixed income markets preferred.
  • Internship or work experience within investment management, fixed income markets, treasury, trading, or capital markets.
  • Progress toward CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) designation or other relevant industry certifications.
  • Exposure to institutional fixed income products such as corporate bonds, municipal bonds, U.S. Treasuries, agency securities, or securitized products.
  • Current pursuit of MBA (Master's degree in Business Administration), CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst), or CPA (Certified Public Accountant)
