Fixed Income Derivatives information

What is fixed income derivatives?

Fixed income derivatives are financial contracts whose value is derived from underlying fixed income securities, such as bonds or interest rates. Common examples include interest rate swaps, credit default swaps, and bond futures. These instruments are used by investors and institutions to manage risk, hedge exposures, or speculate on movements in interest rates and credit spreads. They play a crucial role in modern financial markets by providing tools for risk management and price discovery.

What are some common challenges faced when working in fixed income derivatives, and how can candidates prepare for them?

Professionals in Fixed Income Derivatives often face challenges related to rapidly changing market conditions, complex valuation models, and regulatory requirements. To succeed, candidates should be comfortable with quantitative analysis, stay updated on market trends, and be proactive in learning about new regulatory changes. Collaboration with traders, risk managers, and IT teams is essential for managing risk and developing effective strategies. Gaining hands-on experience with relevant pricing tools and maintaining strong communication skills will help you thrive in this fast-paced environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a fixed income derivatives specialist, and why are they important?

To excel as a Fixed Income Derivatives Specialist, you need a strong background in finance, quantitative analysis, and risk management, often supported by a relevant degree such as finance, mathematics, or economics. Familiarity with financial modeling tools like Excel, Bloomberg Terminal, and programming languages such as Python or VBA is highly valuable, as are certifications like CFA or FRM. Exceptional analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills set top performers apart in this field. These capabilities are crucial for accurately pricing derivatives, managing risk exposures, and making informed trading or investment decisions in a complex, fast-moving market.

The Senior Manager, Infrastructure Operations will lead the team responsible for NISA's datacenter and network infrastructure. By working closely with other technology groups and stakeholders across the firm, a successful candidate will play a key role in ensuring a performant, reliable, scalable and secure technology foundation for NISA.

Provide primary technical leadership and guidance across infrastructure engineering responsibilities, including datacenter, server virtualization, network, and core IT systems such as Active Directory/Entra ID and Exchange
  • Partner with the Head of Technology Operations to develop NISA's infrastructure strategy roadmap and integrate it with the enterprise technology strategy
  • Lead, mentor and grow a high-performing technical team, setting clear objectives and building lasting depth and bench strength through training, coaching and strategic planning
  • Collaborate in the running of on-premises and public-cloud infrastructure as a single, continuous environment, partnering day to day with the groups that build NISA's cloud platforms and advancing common automation, observability and infrastructure-as-code practices across both
  • Own the availability, resiliency and performance of mission-critical systems by applying site reliability engineering practices, including defining, building and tracking service-level objectives, error budgets and observability metrics, alongside capacity planning, disaster recovery, and incident and problem management
  • Define and execute against quantified service-level and operational metrics for uptime, performance and capacity, reporting transparently on results and driving continuous improvement against those targets
  • Establish and lead 24x7 on-call and incident-response coverage for production infrastructure, ensuring rapid escalation and resolution to protect uptime and stability
  • Collaborate with technology leaders across the firm, particularly in cybersecurity and cloud platforms, to deliver secure and resilient solutions that meet the firm's operational obligations and its regulatory obligations as an SEC-registered investment adviser
  • Oversee cross-functional Infrastructure Operations staff to ensure the delivery of reliable and scalable solutions that support NISA's strategic technology objectives
  • Maintain a high degree of readiness to adopt and implement new technology solutions and best practices, and foster a culture of continuous improvement and operational excellence
  • Oversee budgeting, vendor relationships and expenditure management in areas of primary responsibility, including selecting and coordinating the purchase of new and replacement hardware and software
  • Collaborate with senior leadership and other teams to ensure timely resolution of pending issues and alignment of team performance with firm objectives
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field or extensive equivalent experience required
  • 10-12 years of IT Infrastructure experience along with 5+ years of progressive experience in a supervisory role managing cross-functional teams in technology delivery, with a demonstrated record of developing talent and leading through change
  • Proven experience operating and maintaining highly available, mission-critical production environments, including high-availability design, disaster recovery and resiliency for systems with stringent uptime requirements
  • Working knowledge of site reliability engineering practices, including service-level objectives, error budgets, and observability and monitoring tooling, and the ability to establish and lead 24x7 on-call and incident-response coverage
  • Experience managing technology environments in financial services, ideally for an SEC-registered investment adviser or comparable institution, with an understanding of the reliability, security and compliance expectations that accompany an SEC-regulated environment
  • Hands-on experience across hybrid environments spanning on-premises datacenter and public cloud, with practical experience using infrastructure-as-code and configuration-management tooling such as Terraform and Ansible
  • Experience with Microsoft, Cisco, Citrix, Palo Alto and public cloud platforms (AWS and Azure) preferred
  • Demonstrated experience as a hands-on technical manager, actively involved in designing, developing and implementing technical solutions
  • Aptitude for troubleshooting and solving complex issues through creative solutions
  • Strong leadership, communication and mentoring skills, including the ability to communicate technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders
