Job description

Overview

This position is within the Corporate Accounting group with a focus on overseeing the fixed asset and lease accounting for the portfolio of stores within the Company. This role is seen as a subject matter expert for fixed asset and lease accounting. This role will be responsible for providing guidance and reviewing the activities of direct reports and ensuring strong internal controls while driving process improvements. The position is reports in Phoenix, Arizona and reports directly to the Sr. Director, Corporate Accounting.

Position reports into the Store Support Office in Phoenix, AZ. Hybrid schedule in office Tuesday - Thursday. 

Essential Functions
  • Create and define Company's fixed asset and lease processes and policies
  • Act as the subject matter expert for fixed asset and lease accounting
  • Establish working relationships with Real Estate team to foster communication regarding changes to lease terms and guidance triggers
  • Partner with functional leads within the organization to build open communication channels and best practices within the department
  • Analyze and review new leases, as well as changes or amendments to existing leases for accounting impact. Communicate and record entries, as necessary
  • Review all journal entries from direct reports related to fixed assets and lease activities as needed in general ledger (lease termination, and tenant improvement allowance, new additions, disposals, depreciation, etc.)
  • Review reconciliation performed by direct reports of fixed assets and leases
  • Responsible for reviewing and working with the facilities team to ensure construction in progress and transfer of assets to stores is timely and appropriate
  • Review all period end and quarter end fixed asset and construction in progress reporting for management and financial reporting
  • Assist with budget and forecasting functions, as needed
  • Oversee the asset retirement obligation calculations for ARO applicable assets
  • Work within a SOX-compliant environment and maintain appropriate controls
  • Proficient in use of Lease Software (Tango), drive process improvement across lease lifecycle and represent Accounting during new release or functionality testing
  • Monitor and address integration process issues between Tango and Workday
  • Work directly with the external and internal auditors on any requests

  • Strong accounting principles knowledge with the initiative to remain current on accounting and other regulatory changes.
  • Remains up to date on current GAAP guidance related to areas of responsibility; partners with Financial Reporting and Accounting management to identify and address technical accounting questions.
  • Excellent documentation skills, research and resolution skills, data analysis
  • Organized and extremely detail oriented.
  • Holds self and others accountable for ensuring that results are achieved; seizes opportunities to produce results without direct supervision; acts on items beyond formal job responsibility; sets high expectations for self and others.
  • Experience in the early stages of a high growth business preferred. Ability to both identify and remove barriers to progress or change.

Education and Certifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting required
  • CPA designation preferred
  • Strong understanding of US GAAP and internal controls required
  • A minimum of five years of progressive experience in public or private accounting
  • Proven leadership experience and mentoring skills, self starter and team player
  • Experience with financial statement preparation, month end close, general ledger, journal entries, reconcilitations, budgeting/forecasting and variance analysis required
  • Experience preparing or reviewing SEC filings
  • Advanced competency in Excel and proficient with other Microsoft Office suite products
  • Experience using ERP and reporting software required (i.e. Workday, Tango)
  • Experience in grocery, retail, restaurant industries a plus
