What is a fishing engineer?

A Fishing Engineer is a specialized oil and gas professional responsible for retrieving lost, stuck, or damaged equipment from wells. They use specialized tools and techniques to remove obstructions and prevent costly delays in drilling or production operations. Fishing Engineers analyze well conditions, design fishing operations, and collaborate with drilling teams to maintain operational safety and efficiency. Their expertise is crucial in minimizing downtime and ensuring smooth oilfield operations.

What are the primary challenges a fishing engineer faces during well intervention operations?

Fishing Engineers often encounter unpredictable downhole conditions that require quick thinking and innovative problem-solving to successfully retrieve stuck or lost equipment. They must analyze well schematics, select and operate specialized fishing tools, and coordinate closely with drilling and service crews to execute safe intervention plans. Time pressure and safety considerations are significant, so meticulous planning and adaptability are essential. Overcoming these challenges is crucial for minimizing operational downtime and ensuring project success.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a fishing engineer, and why are they important?

Fishing Engineers require a solid grounding in engineering principles, fishing tool design, and downhole operations, generally supported by a degree in petroleum, mechanical, or chemical engineering. Familiarity with oilfield fishing tools, drilling rig operations, and certifications such as IWCF (International Well Control Forum) or equivalent are highly valued. Strong problem-solving skills, teamwork, and clear communication set top candidates apart in this role. These competencies enable Fishing Engineers to efficiently address complex wellbore issues, minimize downtime, and ensure safety in challenging drilling environments.

Description

Project Engineer - Highway - Syracuse, NY

Project Engineer - Highway / Roadway Design

Design Central New York highway and roadway infrastructure supporting NYSDOT, the City of Syracuse, and other municipal clients. Projects include corridor improvements, sidewalks, trails, and transportation projects across the region.

In addition to supporting the Syracuse market, this technical project role helps advance highway design, roadway analysis, quality control, and staff mentoring for transportation projects throughout New York, Pennsylvania, and Fisher's broader regional operations.

At Fisher Associates, we are a multidisciplinary design services firm with nine locations nationwide. Our services span civil/site engineering, transportation engineering, landscape architecture, architecture, planning, environmental services, land surveying, GIS, construction inspection, precast, and construction engineering, each offering opportunities to shape communities and improve lives.

What You'll Do

  • Complete highway design, drainage design, alignments, and related transportation engineering assignments.
  • Develop preliminary and detailed design plans, specifications, and cost estimates for projects and infrastructure improvements.
  • Maintain accurate records for design documents, progress reports, budgets, schedules, and project decisions.
  • Coordinate with project managers, technical staff, clients, subconsultants, regulatory agencies, reviewers, and other Fisher disciplines.
  • Mentor junior engineers and support client meetings, presentations, schedule management, and project development tasks.
  • Provide technical support during construction, including RFIs, site visits, and construction-progress review.

Requirements

What We're Looking For

  • B.S. degree in Civil Engineering or related field.
  • 10+ years of transportation experience, with highway engineering experience preferred.
  • Professional Engineering license required.
  • Experience with MicroStation and OpenRoads.
  • Ability to manage technical tasks, deadlines, documentation, quality, and changing priorities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with NYSDOT design standards, roadway/drainage design, construction-phase support, and multidisciplinary transportation project coordination.
  • Strong client communication, ownership, collaboration, critical thinking, problem solving, and sound judgment.
  • Professional performance aligned with Fisher's Mission, Vision, Core Values, and Clientship philosophy.

Why Join Fisher

  • Shape meaningful infrastructure and community projects while working with multidisciplinary teams that value practical problem-solving and technical excellence.
  • Grow in a culture of trust, collaboration, accessible leadership, mentorship, flexibility, and long-term professional development.
  • Contribute to client-focused work where your voice, judgment, ownership, and relationships help drive successful project outcomes.

Compensation + Benefits

  • Fisher offers competitive compensation based on experience, qualifications, licensure, and other factors; total compensation also includes the value of Fisher's benefits.
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • 401(k) plan
  • Company-paid life and disability insurance
  • Hybrid work schedule
  • Generous PTO and paid holidays
  • Strong work-life balance
  • Shareholders program
  • Professional development opportunities and reimbursement
  • Supplemental benefits designed for total well-being and financial security
  • Employee groups focused on community, inclusion, and employee voice

Location Flexibility

While this posting is aligned to the Syracuse, NY market, the role may support teams, projects, and client needs across multiple Fisher office locations. Fisher will also consider strong candidates located near established Fisher office locations based on project needs, team alignment, licensure, client relationships, and growth priorities.
