Who we are:
Established in 1926, Mutual Trading Co., Inc. was originally a small co-op organization for centralized purchasing of basic import foods to service the needs of the early Japanese immigrant society in Southern California. We've grown nearly 100 years old now, and command a premiere position among Japanese foodservice suppliers, as well as fill a key role as "Culinary Ambassador" promoting Japanese foods worldwide. Currently, we import, manufacture, and distribute over 7,000 Japanese foods, beverages, restaurant equipment and supplies.

Hours: 8AM - 5PM

Essential Job Functions:
  • Handle fresh seafood processing (cutting, scaling and cleaning fish).
  • Maintain proper fish storage by organizing and correctly receiving deliveries, and ensure processing areas are kept clean and sanitized at all times.
  • Assist with loading and unloading of fish shipments.
  • Pack fresh seafood orders for customers.
  • Sort and grade fish based on size, species, and quality standards.
  • Perform quality checks on all fish products to ensure they meet established standards and remove products that do not meet the required standards.
  • Maintain a clean, sanitary and safe working environment in compliance with food safety requirements.
  • Record and document relevant information, including quantities, weights and types of fish received.
  • Comply with all applicable food safety, health and workplace safety regulations.
  • Meet daily production and operational targets as assigned.
  • Adhere to Company attendance policies and designated work schedule to keep consistent and reliable attendance.
  • Attend company events and functions outside of normal working hours.
  • Perform other duties as required from manager.
  • Obligation to answer to all management as requested.

Physical Requirements:
  • Able to work without sitting for extended period of time, including standing and walking.
  • Require physical stamina and ability to withstand cold temperatures.
  • Able to talk, hear, climb, balance, smell, reach, bend, kneel, and lift and/or move up to 50 pounds frequently.
  • Able to handle and move up to 165 pounds assisted frequently.
  • Specific vision abilities are required, including close and distant vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus and maintain clarity.
  • Working Conditions
    • Noise Level: Normal to loud.
    • Location: Indoors and work in a cold and wet fish processing environment.
    • Required to wear company provided insulated freezer suit while in freezer.
    • Freezing temperatures ranging between -55 and -15 degrees Fahrenheit.

Other Requirements
  • Basic level English required – Read/write/speak/listen.
  • Other language such as Spanish, Korea, Japanese or Chinese is a plus.
  • Ability to work weekends, holidays, and afterhours as needed.
  • Experience with fish processing equipment and techniques is preferred.
  • Able to operate warehouse machinery (such as electric pallet jack, stand up stacker) in compliance with safety guidelines.
  • Knowledge of seafood types and quality indicators.
  • Ability to follow GMP, HACCP, and sanitation procedures.
  • Ability to safely use knives and seafood processing tools.
  • Maintain a positive attitude.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team.
  • Ability to adapt to frequent changes in assignments and workload.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent work experience preferred.
  • 2+ years of relevant experience preferred.

Knowledge and Skills:
  • Basic mathematical knowledge – such as counting inventory, weight and measurement conversions, combining, etc.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of and adherence to proper safety procedures.
  • Knowledge of Japanese foods preferred.
