POSITION SUMMARY:
Responsible for feeding and rearing juvenile salmonids and providing overall care and maintenance to the hatchery.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Feeds and rears juvenile salmonids at six remote site acclimation ponds and the fish hatchery. Scatters food over surface of water by hand or activates blower that automatically scatters food over water to feed fish.
  2. Assists Hatchery Manager in all aspects of fish culture.
  3. Participates in stream surveys counting type of fish and quantity; traps spawning fish and recovers tags; participates in sample fishing.
  4. Participates in operating and maintaining the Tribal Fish Hatchery; strips eggs and milt from fish to fertilize eggs; transfers fry to rearing ponds; feeds fry; stocks streams and ponds.
  5. Performs a variety of maintenance functions at the hatchery; builds baffles for raceways and egg screens; moves fish pen anchors; picks up, stretches out and stores nets.
  6. Operates various hand and power tools and equipment to make minor repairs to hatchery equipment.
  7. Turns valves and places baffles in troughs to adjust volume, depth, velocity and temperature of water.
  8. Sorts fish according to size, coloring and species and transfers fingerlings to rearing ponds or tanks, using buckets or tank truck.
  9. Drains and cleans ponds and troughs, using brushes, chemicals and water.
  10. Participates in the promotion of fisheries enhancement in the Tribe's usual and customary fishing areas.
  11. Performs other duties as assigned.

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Education and/or Experience
High School Diploma/GED; or 2 years of experience working at a fish hatchery/fishery or a related field; or a satisfactory equivalent combination of education and experience on a year for year basis resulting in a total of two years of fisheries experience/education and/or training.
Language Skills
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
Mathematical Skills
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
Reasoning Ability
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
Certificates/Licenses
Must have and maintain a valid and unrestricted Washington State Driver's License. Driver's License must not contain any restrictions that would prevent an employee from operating a GSA vehicle or complying with the Tribe's Vehicle Policy.
Ability to qualify for a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is preferred.
