Job description

We're looking for an experienced Managing Director to serve as the senior-most leader of the hotel, with overall responsibility for its successful operation, commercial performance, and long-term positioning across every area of the property. The ideal candidate has experience leading a luxury, lifestyle, or boutique hotel with strong and dynamic F&B spaces, and pairs hands-on operational command with sharp commercial and brand instinct. You will set the direction for your team, own the property's financial results, and serve as its principal representative to ownership, partners, and the community.
This is a full-time, on-site, exempt position based in Wilmington, Delaware.
About The Quoin
The Quoin is a luxury boutique hotel in the heart of downtown Wilmington, Delaware, where modern innovation meets historic character. Set within a richly detailed, thoughtfully designed building, our 24 rooms and executive suites balance the traditional with the contemporary-layered with vintage and custom furnishings, original artwork, and living detail in every corner. Recognized with a MICHELIN Key, The Quoin is built on exceptional, highly personal service, creating a distinctive and memorable experience for every guest who passes through our doors.
The Quoin is home to three distinct food and beverage experiences. At The Quoin Restaurant, wood-fired Northern Italian fare meets a boldly curated wine list, with exceptional cuts of steak, fresh fish, and handmade pastas served across a 155-seat dining room. Descend into Simmer Down-set in the building's former "Money Room" and named one of Esquire's Best Bars in America-for classic cocktails with a luxurious edge beneath a room-spanning, hand-painted mural. Perched at the penthouse level, The Quoin Rooftop is Wilmington's first and only rooftop bar and lounge, serving light fireside fare and expertly crafted cocktails alongside one-of-a-kind views of the city.
Key Responsibilities
  • Own all areas of the operation, including front office, housekeeping, engineering, and food + beverage across The Quoin Restaurant, Simmer Down, and The Quoin Rooftop, as well as the property's weddings, private dining, and events program.
  • Own the positioning, programming, profitability, and ongoing evolution of The Quoin's three food and beverage outlets-The Quoin Restaurant, Simmer Down, and The Quoin Rooftop-treating F&B as a defining driver of the property's identity and commercial success.
  • Lead through your leadership team to maximize financial performance while upholding quality standards, maximizing levels of guest satisfaction, and maintaining colleague engagement.
  • Direct the development and execution of the annual strategic plan, the annual budget, and operations plan, emphasizing balanced growth and consistent profitability.
  • Own the property's full P&L and commercial strategy and serve as its principal on-site representative to ownership and asset-management partners-providing clear reporting, sound recommendations, and confident stewardship of the asset.
  • Communicate the direction and purpose of all initiatives, resulting in colleague and leader ownership, pride, and desired results.
  • Achieve and maintain superior balanced scorecard results (revenue, STR, GOP, guest experience, colleague engagement, asset maintenance, etc.), with an unrelenting desire to exceed previous outcomes.
  • Inspire and motivate your leaders and colleagues to foster a guest-focused and results-oriented environment.
  • Deliver best-in-class guest service and satisfaction that reflects The Quoin's MICHELIN-recognized standards, through avenues such as training, survey analysis, feedback, and incentive programs.
  • Actively seek out critical information on market trends, segment behavior, and other data to make informed decisions and remain ahead of the pack.
  • Create and promote learning opportunities and development plans for direct reports, fostering a culture of development.
  • Champion employee engagement and promote a collaborative and inclusive environment where all employees are encouraged to speak up and their input is valued.
  • Act as steward of the Quoin brand, bringing it to life in every corner of the hotel, from the guest room to the rooftop.
  • Safeguard The Quoin's luxury reputation and standing in the market-upholding the recognition and affiliation standards behind its MICHELIN Key and comparable distinctions, protecting the guest experience that sustains them, and actively managing how the hotel is perceived across guest reviews, media, and the competitive set.
  • Serve as The Quoin's lead ambassador in the market, building and maintaining relationships with local businesses, civic and cultural organizations, media, and industry partners across Wilmington and the broader region to elevate the hotel's visibility and reinforce its standing as a destination.
  • Collaborate with your shared services partners (marketing, revenue management, people & culture) to maximize performance and engage with companywide initiatives.

Qualifications
  • Experience leading a hotel with a strong F&B component; luxury, lifestyle, or boutique experience preferred.
  • Have a minimum of 7 years' experience in progressively senior management positions in the hospitality industry and have held a top leadership role (General Manager, Hotel Manager, or Managing Director - preferred) at a hotel for at least two years.
  • Have a track record of achieving and maintaining superior results across all areas of the hotel and can articulate the underlying strategies that led to your achievements.
  • Possess a thorough knowledge of the hospitality industry, have a strong financial background, sound administrative skills, well-developed management skills, and a demonstrated ability to effectively lead.
  • You enjoy creative and innovative projects that focus on brand and guest experience.
