What is a first year associate attorney?

A First Year Associate Attorney is a newly hired lawyer at a law firm, typically in their first year of practicing law after graduating from law school and passing the bar exam. These associates work under the supervision of more experienced attorneys, assisting with legal research, drafting documents, and supporting case preparation. Their primary focus is on learning firm procedures, building foundational legal skills, and gaining practical experience in their chosen area of law. The position is usually the entry-level role for attorneys at most law firms.

What are some common challenges faced by first year associate attorneys, and how can they effectively manage their workload?

First Year Associate Attorneys often encounter challenges such as balancing multiple assignments, meeting tight deadlines, and adapting to the firm's expectations for quality and accuracy. Effective time management and clear communication with supervising attorneys are essential skills to develop early on. It's helpful to proactively seek feedback, ask questions to clarify tasks, and use organizational tools to prioritize work. Building strong relationships with peers and mentors can also provide valuable support and guidance as you navigate the demands of the role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a first year associate attorney, and why are they important?

To thrive as a First Year Associate Attorney, you need a Juris Doctor (JD) degree, bar admission, strong legal research and writing skills, and a solid understanding of core legal concepts. Familiarity with legal research databases like Westlaw or LexisNexis, proficiency in Microsoft Office, and experience with case management systems are typically required. Excellent communication, meticulous attention to detail, and the ability to manage time efficiently are standout soft skills in this role. These competencies ensure effective client service, high-quality legal work, and successful collaboration within a fast-paced law firm environment.

Job description

Associate Attorney โ€“ Family Law

Full-Time In-Office Naples, FL

About Shemkus Family Law

Shemkus Family Law, P.A. is a Florida Supreme Court Board Certified family law firm based in Naples, Florida. Led by Michael Shemkus โ€” a 2025โ€“2026 Super Lawyers selectee with a strong appellate track record โ€” the firm represents clients across Southwest Florida in dissolution of marriage, equitable distribution, time-sharing, alimony, and related family law matters.

Our goal is to be the most effective family law attorneys in Southwest Florida โ€” and we believe true effectiveness is multidimensional. It requires academic rigor and intellectual curiosity, a competitive drive to advocate zealously for every client, and the interpersonal intelligence to build productive relationships across the full spectrum of personalities we encounter: our teammates, our clients, opposing counsel, and the judges before whom we appear. We pursue that standard through a culture of genuine work-life balance, deep collaboration, and continuous professional growth โ€” not through grinding billable hours.

The Opportunity

We are seeking a motivated associate attorney to join our eight-person team. This is a litigation-focused role in which you will handle your own caseload of low- to moderate-complexity family law matters with the significant and ongoing support of all firm attorneys, including the principal. You will work in a highly collaborative environment where multiple attorneys and staff engage on client matters together, and where asking questions and learning is not just tolerated โ€” it is the culture.

This is an exceptional opportunity for a trial-minded attorney who wants real courtroom experience, room to grow, and a firm that invests in its people.

Responsibilities
  • Manage an independent docket of low- to moderate-complexity family law cases from intake through resolution
  • Appear at hearings, depositions, and mediations as lead counsel
  • Receive significant and ongoing support from all firm attorneys, including the principal, across all aspects of litigation
  • Draft motions, orders, pleadings, discovery, and correspondence
  • Collaborate with firm colleagues on shared client matters
  • Maintain organized and timely case files using the firmโ€™s practice management system (LEAP)
Qualifications

Required:

  • Active Florida Bar membership in good standing
  • At least two years of Florida Bar licensure
  • Demonstrated trial or litigation experience
  • Strong written and oral advocacy skills
  • Ability to manage a caseload independently

Preferred:

  • Prior family law experience (not required โ€” we will train the right litigator)
  • Familiarity with LEAP or similar legal practice management software
  • Experience in Southwest Florida courts
Compensation & Benefits

Compensation is competitive and commensurate with experience, and includes a performance bonus structure.

  • Employer-sponsored health insurance
  • Unlimited vacation โ€” use it; we mean it (production responsibilities must be met, but we trust our team)
  • Low annual billable hour target (~1,000 hours per year)
  • No hard start or end times โ€” we focus on results, not clock-watching
  • Florida Bar dues and CLE expenses paid by the firm
  • SIMPLE IRA plan with employer matching
  • Malpractice insurance coverage provided
Our Culture

We operate with an informal open-door policy. No one here is too busy to answer a question or talk through a legal issue. We integrate multiple team members per client matter โ€” not because we have to, but because better answers come from collaboration. We want our attorneys to love working here and to channel that into becoming exceptional lawyers.

If you are the type of attorney who wants to grow fast, handle real cases, learn from experienced trial counsel, and work somewhere that respects your life outside the office โ€” we want to hear from you.

All inquiries are held in strict confidence.

Shemkus Family Law, P.A. is an equal opportunity employer.
