How much do first robotics jobs pay per year?
What is a First Robotics job?
A FIRST Robotics job typically involves mentoring, coaching, or supporting student teams in designing, building, and programming robots for competitions organized by FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology). These roles can be volunteer-based or paid positions in schools, nonprofit organizations, or STEM-focused companies. Responsibilities may include teaching engineering concepts, overseeing project management, ensuring safety, and fostering teamwork. Many professionals in this field have backgrounds in robotics, engineering, or computer science.
What does a typical week look like for a FIRST Robotics mentor or coach?
A typical week for a FIRST Robotics mentor or coach involves leading students through project planning, design brainstorming, prototype building, and programming sessions, often during after-school hours or weekends. Mentors coordinate with other team members, provide technical assistance, and help manage deadlines for submissions and competition preparations. Collaboration with teachers, parents, and local industry sponsors is also common, especially when organizing events or fundraising activities. The role is dynamic and rewarding, emphasizing hands-on learning, mentorship, and teamwork as students progress through different stages of the robotics season.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the First Robotics position, and why are they important?
To thrive in a FIRST Robotics mentor or coach position, strong knowledge of engineering principles, robotics design, and hands-on mechanical/electrical skills are fundamental, often supported by experience in STEM fields or education. Familiarity with tools such as CAD software, programming environments like LabVIEW or Java, and FIRST-specific hardware kits is essential. Leadership, teamwork, and effective communication are standout soft skills, as mentors collaborate closely with students and other volunteers. These abilities ensure successful guidance of robotics teams, foster student growth, and help meet competition goals in a dynamic, technical environment.

Job description
Brophy College Preparatory is currently accepting applications for the position of Head Coach of the Robotics Program (Broncobots) beginning in August of 2026. The Broncobots, established in 2002, is one of the oldest and largest high school robotics programs in Arizona. Brophy is looking for a visionary leader to oversee our multi-tiered competitive teams, operating out of the school's state-of-the-art Innovation Commons.Â
The Head Coach will lead a program that emphasizes professionalism, community building, and helps students recognize their God-given talents while making a difference in the community.Â
Program Scope and ResponsibilitiesÂ
The Head Coach will oversee and coordinate multiple teams across three major competitive tiers:Â
FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC): Lead the "Varsity-991" level program where students build industrial-sized robots for major regional events, including the Arizona North Regional in Flagstaff as well as the Las Vegas Regional or other tournaments in the Western United States.Â
FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC): Manage accessible, high-energy teams (Teams 201, 202, 23737, 26983, and 30596 ) through local qualifiers and the State Championship.Â
First Lego League (FLL): Working with Brophy’s Loyola Academy, develop and foster student skills and interest in robotics.Â
Oversee student leadership and coordinate outreach, including the mentoring of younger students at Loyola Academy.Â
Coordinate a team of adult robotics mentors and coaches.Â
Monitor teams after school and on occasional weekends in preparation for tournaments.Â
Maintain the equipment and resources within the Innovation Commons, ensuring a safe and productive environment for fabrication and coding. Ensure safety standards, protocols, and training in all lab environments.Â
Coordinate with the Director of Innovative Technologies for scheduling, supervision, equipment maintenance, supply inventory, and purchasing.Â
Develop partnerships with local universities, industry professionals, and non-profit organizations to support student learning and team development.Â
Be an active participant in the FIRST Community, including organizing the hosting FIRST Tournament(s) on the Brophy Campus. Represent Brophy’s Robotics program at community events, competitions, and conferences.Â
Compensation and BenefitsÂ
Stipend/Salary is based on background and experience and is highly competitive with local and private school standards.Â
Opportunity to work with highly motivated students in a collaborative, professional environment.Â
Access to premier facilities and a strong community of faculty and alumni mentors.Â
About BrophyÂ
A Catholic, Jesuit secondary school with an enrollment of 1,300 boys, Brophy offers its students a rigorous and relevant college preparatory curriculum, a highly developed fine arts and music program, a diversity of extracurricular activities, and a strong retreat and service learning program. As a Jesuit school, Brophy takes great pride in striving to form well-rounded young men who are firmly grounded in a relationship with God that orients them to lead lives of service. In addition to the high school, Brophy includes Loyola Academy, which is a tuition-free, comprehensive junior high school program for sixth, seventh, and eighth-grade boys who demonstrate academic promise but have had limited educational opportunities. As a Catholic, Jesuit school, the faculty and staff are committed to living out those values personally and professionally, including the work of anti-racism. More information about the school is available at www.brophyprep.org.Â
To Apply: Interested candidates must apply by emailing a letter of introduction and a résumé to Brophy's Principal, Jim Bopp, at jbopp@brophyprep.org.Â
Compensation is competitive to market and commensurate with experience. Part-time positions are not eligible for benefits, including no tuition benefits or discounts for dependents.Â
Brophy College Preparatory is an equal-opportunity employer. We are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees.Â
QualificationsÂ
A bachelor’s degree in engineering, physics, computer science, or a related STEM field is preferred.Â
Proven experience in competitive robotics (FIRST or VEX) as a coach, mentor, or participant is highly desirable.Â
Understanding of CAD, programming (Java, C++, or Python), and mechanical fabrication.Â
A deep passion for the mission and values of Brophy’s Catholic, Jesuit identity, forming "Men for Others" through the lens of technology and innovation.Â
