Job description

Sheriff's First Responder Paramedic

Shift information: 5% additional pay for evening shift work; 7.5% additional pay for night shift work. Applicants must be able and willing to work any shift of a 24-hour period and any five of seven days.

Examination Schedule:

  • Written Exam: Qualified candidates will be notified of the testing date five (5) days prior to the examination.

Examination: Written Exam (Weight 100%): Will be conducted for the purpose of assessing the applicant's knowledge of current Kern County Paramedic protocols; English language and grammar; basic record keeping; basic computer skills; safe and effective operation of emergency vehicles and knowledge of current vehicle codes. The Human Resources Division may solely conduct an appraisal of application materials should there be an insufficient number of candidates to warrant a written examination. Applicants must attain at least a 70% score on each phase of the examination process.

Minimum Qualifications / Employment Standards: High School Diploma, G.E.D., or equivalent. Possess and maintain the following licenses/certifications:

  • Valid California Motor Vehicle Driver's License.
  • Valid Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Ambulance Driver Certificate.
  • Valid Paramedic license issued by the California State EMS Authority.
  • Valid CPR and Advanced Cardias Life Support (ACLS) Certifications.

Incumbents will be required to obtain a hoist rescue certification within one year of appointment. Failure to maintain any of the required certifications or licenses as outlined in LEMSA Paramedic policies will result in discipline up to and including termination. Admittance to the examination will require a valid government issued photograph identification. Applicants who are unable to present proper identification must make arrangements with the Human Resources Division prior to the test date. A background check may be conducted for this classification. Following an offer of employment, you may be required to submit to post offer medical and drug screening tests at County expense. This examination will establish an eligible list from which an immediate appointment will be made at the Kern County Sheriff's Office. Other permanent and temporary appointments will be made as needed. Successful candidates will remain on the eligible list for a period of twelve-months, unless specified otherwise by the Civil Service Commission.
