Job description

Summary/Objective:

It is the responsibility of the 1st Press Operator to optimize the profitability of the Company by performing to the highest level of efficiency in the following task categories: maintaining constant quality, make readies, maintenance of equipment, and the management of their respective press crew. Through these activities, the 1st Press Operator will ensure that the highest level of productivity is consistently achieved. 

Schedule

Rotates every two weeks 

  • A Shift: Monday–Friday, 7:00 AM–3:30 PM
  • B Shift: Monday–Friday, 3:30 PM–12:00 AM (Midnight)

Essential Functions:

  • Matching color proofs.
  • Maintaining color consistency during press runs.
  • Ensuring match of special spot colors.
  • Ensuring proper grain direction.
  • Overseeing sheet register (ix side guide, horizontal register).
  • Visually checking for sheet defects (hickies, spots, drying, washout, cracked sheets, draws, offset and repile quality).
  • Copies, reads, and understands press job ticket.
  • Verifies quantities, ink, stock specs, and any special instructions.
  • Instructs press crew on sequence, coating, stock requirements and any special instructions.
  • Sets ink fountains.
  • Sets press delivery for size.
  • Ensures that packing and cylinder pressures are correct.
  • Complies with all hazardous waste requirements.
  • Assists in any needed setup of press.
  • Inks up press.
  • Check coating blanket to ensure the knockout is correct and right.
  • Makes necessary adjustments to achieve ink/water balance.
  • Achieves color match to proofs and any special colors.
  • Double check all sheet Lines ups checking for size, straightness, correct pagination, bleed requirements, position of sheet to the HP screen, die vinyl, or grain direction. Your signature required on all line up sheets.
  • Enters information into FCP job tracking.
  • Re-checks proofs for any missed corrections.
  • Maintains time and material sheet.
  • Performs any necessary ISO paperwork. Press checklist is filled out and placed on the last load.
  • Where appropriate, interacts with customers, salesmen, CSRs, etc. in a helpful, knowledgeable manner.
  • Gets signed color approval. Two signatures required on Master Press approval sticker.
  • Check loads after printing for any defects, side guide, correct counts, cracked sheets, coating issues offset, scuffs.
  • If any defects are found, make sure they are sorted before the load is moved to the next process.
  • Review and sign off on the fanned-out sheets. Replace sheets if the quality is not to the Company’s standards. Mark any quality areas on the fanned-out sheets.

Maintenance of equipment including:

  • Responsible for instruction and supervision of all lubrication done to press and pumps.
  • Fill out a requisition form for all parts need to keep the press up to company standards.
  • Makes any necessary adjustments to rollers to achieve correct settings.
  • Changes and/or cleans any worn rollers.
  • Reports any mechanical or electrical safety failures to pressroom manager.
  • Performs any minor repairs on press if so instructed.
  • Logs any repairs or maintenance performed.
  • Maintains a high level of housekeeping on and around the press.
  • Trains press crew to ensure job requirements are met and performed in a timely manner.
  • Instructs press crew on proper safety procedures.
  • Instructs press crew on proper pressroom procedures for washups and oversees it.
  • Educates press crew to improve on their knowledge, skills and expertise or their respective job.
  • Trains press crew on lubrication requirements of equipment.
  • Performs all other tasks/duties as may be assigned by their supervisor.

Requirements/Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 5 years of machine press operation

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • First Press Operator Certification
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • AAS in a related technical field

Physical Demands:

  • Regularly required to talk or hear.
  • Regularly required to sit, regular use of hands. 
  • Frequently required to stand and walk. 
  • Occasionally required to reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and use foot/feet to operate machine. 
  • Occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. 
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
