Job description

Job Title: Driveline-Transmission Technician
Location: Davenport, Iowa
Company: Interstate Power Systems
Pay Range: $30.00-$40.00/hour DOE
We are seeking a skilled Driveline-Transmission Technician with specialized training in heavy-duty diesel applications to join our team. The technician will diagnose, repair, rebuild, and maintain Allison-automatic transmissions used in commercial vehicles, including trucks, buses, and heavy-duty equipment. This role requires expertise in Allison-transmission models (e.g., 1000/2000, 3000, 4000 series, and legacy units like AT/MT/HT) and a strong understanding of heavy-duty diesel vehicle systems.
Key Responsibilities
  • Diagnosis: Inspect and diagnose transmission issues using diagnostic tools, OEM-level software (e.g., Allison DOC), and technical manuals to identify mechanical, electrical, or hydraulic faults.
  • Repair and Rebuild: Perform repairs, overhauls, and rebuilds of Allison-transmissions, including 1000/2000, 3000, 4000 series, and legacy models, ensuring compliance with manufacturer specifications.
  • Maintenance: Conduct preventative maintenance, including fluid changes, filter replacements, and adjustments to ensure optimal transmission performance.
  • Field Service: Perform on-site repairs and troubleshooting at customer locations or roadside as needed, ensuring minimal downtime for heavy-duty vehicles.
  • Testing: Test-drive vehicles or use diagnostic equipment to verify repairs and ensure transmissions operate within specified parameters.
  • Documentation: Maintain detailed records of diagnostics, repairs, and maintenance activities, including parts used and labor performed.
  • Customer Interaction: Consult with customers to explain technical issues, repair plans, and maintenance recommendations in a clear and professional manner.
  • Safety Compliance: Adhere to all safety protocols, DOT regulations, and company policies while working in shop or field environments.

Required Qualifications
  • Experience: Minimum of 1-3 years of experience repairing and rebuilding Allison-transmissions, with specific expertise in heavy-duty diesel applications (e.g., trucks, buses, construction equipment).
  • Training: Formal training in Allison transmission systems, such as Allison Authorized Technician certification or equivalent OEM training programs.
  • Technical Skills:
    • Thorough knowledge of Allison-transmission models (1000/2000, 3000, 4000, AT/MT/HT) and their applications in heavy-duty diesel vehicles.
    • Proficiency with diagnostic tools, including Allison-transmission DOC software, and ability to interpret technical schematics and manuals.
    • Strong understanding of diesel vehicle systems, including engines, drivelines, and electronic control systems.
  • Mechanical Aptitude: Ability to troubleshoot complex mechanical, hydraulic, and electronic issues with precision and efficiency.
  • Physical Requirements: Capable of lifting heavy parts (up to 50 lbs.), working in confined spaces, and performing physically demanding tasks in various environments.
  • Certifications: Valid driver's license required; Commercial Driver's License (CDL) preferred. ASE certifications or Allison-specific certifications are a plus.
  • Soft Skills: Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, effective communication, and ability to work independently or as part of a team.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with additional heavy-duty diesel systems (e.g., Cummins, Detroit Diesel, CAT engines).
  • Familiarity with Allison's eGen Power® electric axles or hybrid propulsion systems.
  • Advanced certifications, such as Allison-Transmission Master Technician or ASE T-Series (Medium/Heavy Truck) credentials.
  • Experience in field service or mobile repair for heavy-duty vehicles.
