Heavy-Duty Diesel Mechanic

Location: Davenport, IA
Company: Interstate Power Systems
Pay: $25.00–$40.00/hour DOE
Schedule: Full-Time | Second Shift

Interstate Power Systems is hiring a Heavy-Duty Diesel Mechanic to support our growing operation in Davenport, IA. This position is ideal for technicians with hands-on experience working on Class 8 trucks, diesel engines, transmissions, and heavy-duty vehicle systems.


Position Overview

As a Heavy-Duty Diesel Mechanic, you will diagnose, repair, and maintain diesel-powered trucks and equipment, with a strong focus on Freightliner, Detroit Diesel, Allison Transmissions, and Cummins engines. This role requires strong diagnostic skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently on second shift.


What You’ll Be Doing

  • Diagnose and repair heavy-duty diesel engines, transmissions, electrical, and hydraulic systems
  • Perform preventive maintenance including oil changes, brake inspections, tire rotations, and fluid services
  • Use diagnostic software and tools to troubleshoot engine and drivetrain issues
  • Conduct detailed vehicle inspections and recommend corrective actions
  • Document repairs, parts, and maintenance using fleet management software
  • Ensure all work meets DOT regulations, safety guidelines, and company standards
  • Collaborate with first-shift technicians and leadership to maintain workflow
  • Keep the shop clean, organized, and safety-compliant
  • Stay current on diesel engine technology and manufacturer updates

What We’re Looking For

  • 3–5+ years of heavy-duty diesel mechanic experience (truck, fleet, or equipment)
  • Strong experience with Freightliner, Detroit Diesel, Cummins, and Allison products
  • Proficiency with diagnostic tools such as:
    • Detroit Diesel Diagnostic Link
    • Cummins Insite
    • Allison DOC
  • Ability to read schematics, wiring diagrams, and service manuals
  • ASE certifications (T2–T8 preferred); OEM certifications a plus
  • High school diploma or GED; diesel tech school preferred
  • Valid driver’s license required; CDL A or B preferred (not required)
  • Ability to lift up to 75 lbs and work in a shop environment
  • Must provide own basic tools (specialty tools provided)

  • Shop-based role with occasional outdoor work
  • Exposure to noise, fumes, and heavy machinery
  • Second shift with flexibility for overtime and rotating on-call weekends
