Job description

The Pat Tillman Foundation (PTF) selects exceptional military service members, veterans, and spouses and invests in them for life through scholarships, leadership development, career architecture, and community and events. They are the next generation of public- and private-sector leaders committed to service beyond self. Inspired by Pat Tillman, who proudly put his NFL career with the Arizona Cardinals on hold to serve his country, family, and friends, the Pat Tillman Foundation was established following Pat’s death in April 2004 while serving with the 75th Ranger Regiment in Afghanistan. Over the last 22 years, PTF has supported over 1,000 Tillman Scholars as they’ve furthered their education and increased their impact in the world.


Role Overview

The Pat Tillman Foundation (PTF) seeks a Major Gift Officer to build and manage the Foundation’s $10,000 to $50,000 major giving program. Reporting to the VP of Development, this leader owns the major gift portfolio, cultivation and solicitation strategy, and donor pipeline within that giving tier; works alongside the CEO and VP of Development as donors move between giving tiers; and partners across the development team to grow PTF’s major gift donor base.

Responsibilities and Impact


Portfolio Management

  • Cultivate and deepen relationships with current $10,000 to $50,000 Major Gift donor portfolio, serving as the dedicated relationship owner for the major giving tier
  • Manage a personal donor portfolio against defined visit, call, and touchpoint targets, establishing a tailored communication strategy for each donor across phone, virtual, and in-person meetings, and email
  • Partner with VP of Development to build and implement PTF’s first donor wealth screening process, screening individual donors on a regular cadence and reading resulting reports to identify and qualify new major gift prospects
  • Partner with Development Manager to identify current $1,000 to $9,999 donors in their pipeline who are ready to elevate into the $10,000 to $50,000 portfolio, and manage the handoff process
  • Track all donor interactions, moves, and pipeline stages in Salesforce, in coordination with Sr Manager of Data Operations' data and reporting standards
  • Meet an annual fundraising goal for the assigned portfolio, tracking progress against target throughout the fiscal year

Cultivation and Solicitation

  • Build pipeline in coordination with major gift and individual donor conversations, working alongside VP of Development and CEO to identify prospective Major Gift donors and as donors move between giving tiers
  • Lead the moves management process for portfolio donors: identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship
  • Develop and execute individualized cultivation and ask strategies for each major donor, including but not limited to: ask-timing, gift-level recommendations, and ongoing stewardship plans
  • Represent PTF at donor events, site visits, and cultivation activities
  • Draft and personalize solicitation materials, proposals for major gift prospects
  • Partner with Development Associate to identify event participants with major-gift capacity from their third-party events program, and manage the qualification and hand-off process

Stewardship and Reporting

  • Ensure gift agreements, restrictions, and donor intent are properly documented and passed to Data Operations and Finance for accurate processing
  • Draft, personalize, and send acknowledgment letters for major gift donors
  • Flag donors whose capacity or engagement suggests readiness for the principal tier or corporate support, and coordinate handoff to VP of Development or CEO
  • Report regularly to VP of Development on pipeline health, gift forecasts, and progress against revenue targets
