Job description

Overview

The Touro University California College of Osteopathic Medicine (TUCOM) Department of Clinical Sciences and Community Health Academic Predoctoral Teaching Fellowship (DoCS Fellowship) represents a unique scholarly opportunity within the DoCS Department, and an additional enhancement of the educational resources available to the Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree program. This fellowship fosters the development of future educators. Participating Fellows will be involved in the development and implementation of the TUCOM curricula, have opportunities to enhance their Osteopathic professional connections, make substantial clinical/didactic inquiries, develop medical education delivery concepts and skills, and conduct original research and disseminate their results. The program includes specific stipend remuneration benefits and tuition relief.

Description

Time Commitment: Fellows extend graduation from the DO program by one (1) year. Fellows will begin their service once 3rd year core rotations are complete. Their 4th and 5th years of school will be divided into 6-month blocks, alternating between Fellow service on campus, and routine clinical rotations off campus.

Responsibilities

Fellowship Duties and Responsibilities

  • Fellows will report to both the Director of the Fellowship Program and the Chairperson of the Department of Clinical Sciences and Community Health (DoCS) throughout the duration of their fellowship.
  • Fellows are required to attend all mandatory trainings relevant to their fellowship responsibilities, including but not limited to:
    • Sexual Harassment Prevention
    • Workplace Safety
    • FERPA Compliance
    • Canvas
  • Fellows are expected to participate in monthly meetings with the Fellowship Director and/or DoCS Chair. These meetings will focus on:
    • Developing and refining teaching skills
    • Building an educator portfolio
    • Reviewing progress in clinical, teaching, and research objectives
  • Additional meetings may be scheduled with other DoCS faculty members as needed to support the Fellow's advancement and ensure alignment with the goals of the fellowship.
  • Fellows will be expected to mentor and teach first- and second-year students a as assigned by the Fellowship Director. This includes both times spent on preparation as well as execution of teaching duties such as:
    • Delivery of one or more lectures for each on-campus service period, with appropriate mentorship by senior faculty. 
    • The leadership of one or more labs for each on-campus service period, with appropriate mentorship by senior faculty. 
    • Leading one or more clinical reasoning sessions for each on-campus service period, with appropriate mentorship by senior faculty.
    • Facilitating Osteopathic Doctoring labs.
    • Tutoring and leading review sessions and practical referrals. 
    • Assist faculty and administrative staff during practicals 
    • Administering other educational duties.
    • Hosting office hours for students
    • Administrative hours (setting up emails, responding to emails relevant to the fellowship, etc.)
    • Lab setup, including audiovisual preparation and organization of lab materials. 
  • Fellows are expected to attend regular and special DoCS departmental meetings, including retreat.
  • Any special duties or projects that the Fellow participates in must be approved by the Fellowship Director.  Additionally, Fellows may be assigned special duties or projects at the direction of the Chair or Director.  Such assignments will take into consideration the Fellow's personal and professional goals to the extent possible." 

 

  

Fellows' Timing: Fellows serve for 2 semesters, either 2 in fall or 2 in spring, but will occasionally make up 2-4 weeks in the other semester as needed for financial aid requirements

Students can apply in the second year of medical school. They must be at least a 4th year medical student in good standing to start their fellowship.
