Summary of Position

Helps produce content for our Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, X, Facebook, Nextdoor, and LinkedIn platforms, with a focus on implementing our social media strategy to increase video views and expand our reach to newer, younger and diverse audiences across Long Island. The ideal candidate is a sharp, hardworking and flexible journalist who lives and breathes social media 24/7.

There is a preferred candidate for this position.


Essential Duties & Functions

  • Independently crafts posts that go out live to over 1 million followers across Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, and others. The candidate must ensure that the posts reflect the voice and mission of Newsday and NewsdayTV.
  • Brainstorm, draft and enforce strategy designed for our social team’s goals and efforts.
  • Helps schedule content on our daily calendar
  • Shooting and producing innovative and engaging social-first video content for all Newsday and NewsdayTV platforms on such topics as food, Long Island activities, etc. via Adobe Premiere, CapCut or using other editing tools.
  • Running NewsdayTV live streams on Facebook, X and YouTube.
  • Conduct interviews on camera and serve as a on air personality.
  • Create graphics via Canva or Adobe Express, including lower thirds, for videos.
  • Collaborate on story planning and pitch process.
  • Help run breaking news events across platforms.
  • Attends daily content meetings to help stay informed about upcoming stories.
  • Community engagement with promoting content in Facebook groups, etc.


Essential Job Knowledge & Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, mass communications or related field.
  • 2-4 years of previous experience in social media in a newsroom setting.
  • The ability to work independently.
  • Good understanding/knowledge of community-building and newsgathering on social media sites/blogs.
  • Must be comfortable being on camera.
  • Solid copy-editing and sharp writing skills to engage our audience.
  • Strong analytical skills to respond to data in real time and guide our social media strategy.
  • Understanding of and responsiveness to our Long Island audience
  • Flexibility to work differently-scheduled shifts, as assigned.
  • Flexibility to work weekends and holidays, if news breaks.

Physical Requirements

  • Must possess a driver’s license in good standing and a means to travel to various locations throughout Long Island.

Compensation

  • The hourly base rate for this role is $29.89.
