Both roles require similar technical skills and often overlap in industries like consumer electronics and IoT.

How much money does a firmware engineer make?

A firmware engineer's salary varies by experience, location, and industry, but typically ranges from $80,000 to $130,000 annually. Entry-level positions may start lower, while experienced engineers with specialized skills in embedded systems and real-time operating systems can earn higher salaries. Certifications and proficiency with tools like C and assembly language can also influence compensation.

What engineers make $200,000 a year?

Senior firmware engineers, especially those with specialized skills in embedded systems, real-time operating systems, or working in high-demand industries like aerospace or defense, can earn $200,000 or more annually. Compensation often depends on experience, location, certifications, and the complexity of projects handled.

What engineers make $500,000?

Senior engineers in specialized fields such as software, hardware, or aerospace engineering can earn $500,000 or more annually, especially with extensive experience, advanced skills, and leadership roles. High compensation often includes bonuses, stock options, or profit sharing, particularly in large tech companies or startups with significant growth potential.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Firmware Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Firmware Engineer, you need a solid background in embedded systems, C/C++ programming, and a relevant engineering degree such as Electrical or Computer Engineering. Familiarity with hardware debugging tools, version control systems like Git, and real-time operating systems (RTOS) is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help firmware engineers excel, especially when collaborating with hardware and software teams. These skills and qualities are crucial to ensure reliable, efficient firmware that seamlessly integrates with hardware products.

What are some common challenges Firmware Engineers face when working with cross-functional teams?

Firmware Engineers often collaborate closely with hardware designers, software developers, and QA teams. A common challenge is ensuring clear communication of technical requirements and constraints, as firmware must interface seamlessly with hardware and higher-level software. Misalignment or delays in one area can impact overall delivery, so Firmware Engineers need strong problem-solving and collaboration skills to address integration issues and keep projects on track. Regular cross-team meetings and thorough documentation help mitigate these challenges.

What are Firmware Engineers?

Firmware Engineers are professionals who design, develop, test, and maintain the low-level software (firmware) that allows hardware devices to function. This firmware acts as a bridge between the device's hardware and higher-level software, ensuring that hardware components operate correctly and efficiently. Firmware Engineers typically work with embedded systems, writing code in languages like C or C++ for microcontrollers, sensors, and other electronic devices. Their work is crucial in industries such as consumer electronics, automotive, medical devices, and telecommunications.

What does a firmware engineer do?

A firmware engineer designs, develops, and tests low-level software that controls hardware devices such as microcontrollers and embedded systems. They work with programming languages like C or C++, use tools like debuggers and oscilloscopes, and often collaborate with hardware engineers to ensure proper integration and functionality.

Job description

About Us:

Join AMETEK Power Instruments, an innovative leader in electronic instrumentation for the electric utility and process industries. We specialize in delivering top-tier products like fault recorders, annunciators, and turbine engine sensors that measure and monitor power generation, transmission, and end-user assets. If you're ready to make a real impact in the energy and manufacturing sectors, we invite you to bring your expertise and passion to our team.

Job Summary:

We are developing the next generation of our high-accuracy revenue metering platform for generation, transmission, and industrial power measurement. We are seeking a hands-on Senior Firmware Engineer to work shoulder-to-shoulder with our hardware design team through the full development cycle - from schematic review and board bring-up to a shipping, field-deployable product.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Hands-on embedded Linux development: building and configuring the kernel, writing and debugging device drivers, and working with a board support package (BSP); experience with Yocto, Buildroot, or a comparable build system
  • Board bring-up of new hardware in close partnership with HW designers - powering up first articles, validating power rails, clocks, resets, and boot, and triaging early hardware/firmware issues
  • Low-level lab debugging and probing: confident use of oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, JTAG/SWD debuggers, multimeters, signal generators, and bus decoders to root-cause issues at the signal level

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of hands design experience such as below.
  • Proven experience writing firmware applications in C/C++ for timing critical requirements.
  • Designing and implementing low-level serial interfaces and protocols - UART, SPI, I2C, and similar
  • In-circuit and source-level debugging with GDB and IDE-based debug tools (e.g., Eclipse, VS Code)
  • GCC/G++ toolchains and cross-development workflows (Linux- and Windows-hosted)
  • Understanding of embedded memory architecture: program flash, RAM, nonvolatile storage, and file systems
  • Ability to read and interpret electronic schematics
  • Solid grasp of signal processing fundamentals, including frequency-domain analysis (FFT, DFT, Goertzel), digital filtering (FIR), sampling theory (up/down sampling), and time- and frequency-domain measurement techniques.
  • Designing, implementing, and testing features in an existing, long-lived code base

Desired Qualifications:

  • Use of AI Development Tools such as Github CoPilot, Claude Code, Grok Code etc.
  • Digital signal processing and data acquisition as applied to AC/DC Metering devices.
  • Metrology fundamentals - accuracy, precision, resolution, and calibration - and familiarity with revenue-grade accuracy targets (e.g., 0.05% class)
  • Experience implementing PQ recording features: waveform capture, high-speed RMS, harmonic logging, and PQDIF export
  • Knowledge of metering and substation communication protocols: DLMS, IEC 60870-5-102, IEC 61850, DNP 3.0, and Modbus (RTU/TCP)
  • Familiarity with metering and power quality standards across regions - ANSI C12.20 (accuracy classes), C12.1 (code for electricity metering), C12.19 (end-device tables), and C12.18/C12.21/C12.22 (communications); IEC 62052/62053 metering; IEC 61000-4-30 (power quality measurement methods, Class A/S); IEEE C37.90.1; and the IEC 61000-4 EMC immunity series (4-2, 4-3, 4-4, 4-5, 4-6)
  • Experience with relay test sets and power system simulators (e.g., Omicron, Doble)
