How much do firmware engineer jobs pay per year?

As of Aug 20, 2026, the average yearly pay for firmware engineer in Hawaii is $173,961.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $148,600.00 and $213,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is a firmware engineer?

Firmware Engineers are professionals who design, develop, test, and maintain the low-level software (firmware) that allows hardware devices to function. This firmware acts as a bridge between the device's hardware and higher-level software, ensuring that hardware components operate correctly and efficiently. Firmware Engineers typically work with embedded systems, writing code in languages like C or C++ for microcontrollers, sensors, and other electronic devices. Their work is crucial in industries such as consumer electronics, automotive, medical devices, and telecommunications.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a firmware engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Firmware Engineer, you need a solid background in embedded systems, C/C++ programming, and a relevant engineering degree such as Electrical or Computer Engineering. Familiarity with hardware debugging tools, version control systems like Git, and real-time operating systems (RTOS) is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help firmware engineers excel, especially when collaborating with hardware and software teams. These skills and qualities are crucial to ensure reliable, efficient firmware that seamlessly integrates with hardware products.

What are some common challenges firmware engineers face when working with cross-functional teams?

Firmware Engineers often collaborate closely with hardware designers, software developers, and QA teams. A common challenge is ensuring clear communication of technical requirements and constraints, as firmware must interface seamlessly with hardware and higher-level software. Misalignment or delays in one area can impact overall delivery, so Firmware Engineers need strong problem-solving and collaboration skills to address integration issues and keep projects on track. Regular cross-team meetings and thorough documentation help mitigate these challenges.

What is the difference between Firmware Engineer vs Embedded Software Engineer?

AspectFirmware EngineerEmbedded Software Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related fields; knowledge of hardware and low-level programmingBachelor's in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related fields; strong programming skills in C/C++
Work EnvironmentDesigning and developing firmware for hardware devices, often working closely with hardware teamsDeveloping software for embedded systems, often in real-time environments
Industry UsageElectronics, consumer devices, IoT, automotiveConsumer electronics, medical devices, industrial automation

Firmware Engineers focus on creating low-level code that directly interacts with hardware components, while Embedded Software Engineers develop software that runs on embedded systems, often with a broader scope. Both roles require similar technical skills and often overlap in industries like consumer electronics and IoT.

How much money does a firmware engineer make?

A firmware engineer's salary varies based on experience, location, and industry, but typically ranges from $80,000 to $130,000 annually. Senior firmware engineers with specialized skills in embedded systems and real-time operating systems can earn higher salaries, especially in high-demand tech sectors.

Job description

Anduril Industries is a defense technology company with a mission to transform U.S. and allied military capabilities with advanced technology. By bringing the expertise, technology, and business model of the 21st century's most innovative companies to the defense industry, Anduril is changing how military systems are designed, built and sold. Anduril's family of systems is powered by Lattice OS, an AI-powered operating system that turns thousands of data streams into a realtime, 3D command and control center. As the world enters an era of strategic competition, Anduril is committed to bringing cutting-edge autonomy, AI, computer vision, sensor fusion, and networking technology to the military in months, not years.
ABOUT THE TEAM
The Connected Warfare division's Mission Commandteam builds, deploys, integrates, extends, and scales Anduril's software and hardware to deliver mission-critical capabilities to our customers. As the software engineers closest to Anduril customers and end-users, Mission Software Engineers solve technical challenges of operational scenarios while owning the end-to-end delivery of winning capabilities such as Lattice Mesh, Joint All Domain Command & Control, and Anduril's Menace Family-of-Systems.
As a Software Engineer on the Mission Command team, you will build the foundation for a first-of-its-kind platform designed for the tactical edge, solving novel problems across networking, autonomy, systems integration, robotics, and next-generation distributed data layers. Powering resilient, machine-speed decision-making for warfighters and allies-even in contested, disconnected environments-your work will ensure Anduril's products seamlessly work together and with third parties to deliver customer value. Driven by a "Whatever It Takes" mindset, the Mission Command team balances intentional, long-term system design with the pragmatic tradeoffs needed to meet immediate customer needs. By keeping the mission top-of-mind, you will make sound, scalable engineering decisions to deliver high-quality, expedient software that preemptively addresses the national security challenges of the future.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
  • Own software solutions spanning core mesh platforms, data interfaces, and release management deployed directly to customers to scale critical mission capabilities.
  • Deliver well-architected systems using modern software engineering practices-including code and design reviews-while championing scalability, reliability, testability, portability, and maintainability.
  • Drive software solutions end-to-end, partnering closely with end-users to translate complex needs into features while balancing user experience with engineering constraints.
  • Collaborate across multiple teams to plan, build, and test complex, cross-functional functionality.
  • Ensure system health and rapid resolution by creating and analyzing monitoring metrics, triaging production issues, root-causing failures, and coordinating next steps.
  • Travel 10% - 30% of the time to meet customers wherever in the world they are, collaborate with teammates across the globe, understand real-world operating conditions, and build, test, and deploy capabilities directly in the field.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Currently possesses and is able to maintain an active U.S. Secret Clearance
  • Strong engineering background from industry or school, ideally in areas/fields such as Computer Science, Software Engineering, Networking, Mathematics, or Physics
  • At least 3-10+ years working with a variety of programming languages such as Go, Python, Java, C++, Rust, etc.
  • Experience building software solutions involving significant amounts of data processing and analysis
  • Ability to quickly understand and navigate complex systems and established code bases
  • A desire to work on critical software that has a real-world impact

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience working with and designing distributed systems
  • Proven ability to deliver high-quality results at pace, ideally within a startup or high-growth environment
  • Deep networking experience, especially for distributed systems operating in non-standard networking conditions
  • Familiarity with industry standard cloud platforms (AWS, Azure) and software infrastructure fundamentals (networking, security, distributed systems)
  • A deep, demonstrated understanding of how computers and networks work, from a single desktop to a multi-cluster cloud node
  • Professional software development lifecycle experience using tools such as version control, CICD systems, etc.
  • Familiarity with industry standard monitoring, logging, and data management tools and best practices
