How much do firewall jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 4, 2026, the average hourly pay for firewall in the United States is $53.99, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $45.91 and $61.54 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Firewall Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Firewall Engineer, you need a strong understanding of network protocols, security best practices, and experience with firewall configuration, typically supported by a degree in computer science or related certifications like CompTIA Security+ or Cisco CCNP Security. Proficiency with enterprise firewall systems such as Palo Alto, Cisco ASA, or Fortinet, as well as monitoring tools and scripting languages, is essential. Analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for diagnosing issues and collaborating with IT teams. These skills and qualities are vital for ensuring robust network security and protecting organizational data from cyber threats.

What are some common challenges faced by firewall administrators in maintaining network security?

Firewall administrators often face challenges such as keeping up with rapidly evolving cyber threats, ensuring firewall rules are up-to-date, and minimizing disruptions during necessary updates or configuration changes. Balancing security with network performance can also be difficult, as overly restrictive rules may hinder legitimate business operations while lax rules increase vulnerabilities. Effective communication with other IT and security teams is essential to ensure that firewall policies align with organizational needs and compliance requirements.

What are firewalls and what do they do?

Firewalls are security systems—either hardware, software, or a combination of both—that monitor and control incoming and outgoing network traffic based on predefined security rules. Their main purpose is to protect networks and devices from unauthorized access, cyber threats, and malicious attacks by acting as a barrier between trusted internal networks and untrusted external networks, such as the internet. Firewalls can also be configured to block or permit specific types of traffic, helping organizations enforce security policies and maintain data privacy.

What jobs in the US pay 300,000 a year?

For a firewall specialist or cybersecurity professional, earning $300,000 annually typically requires senior-level roles such as cybersecurity director, security architect, or chief information security officer (CISO). These positions often demand extensive experience, advanced certifications like CISSP or CISA, and leadership responsibilities within organizations' security teams. Compensation varies based on industry, company size, and geographic location, with high-paying roles usually found in large corporations or financial institutions.

What is the difference between Firewall vs Network Security Specialist?

AspectFirewallNetwork Security Specialist
CertificationsCompTIA Security+, Cisco CCNA SecurityCompTIA Security+, CISSP, Cisco CCNP Security
Work EnvironmentNetwork security devices, hardware/software configurationSecurity analysis, policy development, incident response
Industry UsageIT departments, cybersecurity firmsIT security teams, consulting firms

While firewalls are essential tools for controlling network traffic, Network Security Specialists develop comprehensive security strategies, including firewall management, to protect organizational assets. Both roles often collaborate but focus on different aspects of cybersecurity.

Job description

Description

Required Qualifications:

- 1–3+ years of experience in firewall/network security administration

- Hands-on experience with Check Point firewalls

Experience managing:

- Firewall rules and policy changes

- High-volume request environments

Strong communication skills and ability to work with business stakeholders

- Must be local to Tulsa, OK and available on-site

Preferred Qualifications:

- Check Point CCSA certification

- Experience with: AlgoSec (policy automation and change management) / Check Point Maestro (Hyperscale) / Firewall upgrades (R81 → R82) / ServiceNow or similar ticketing platforms

- Exposure to Zscaler (ZIA/ZPA) or cloud-delivered security models

- Experience working in a financial services / regulated environment

A leading regional bank in Tulsa is seeking a Check Point Firewall Engineer for a 6–9 month contract-to-hire opportunity supporting a high-visibility data center migration initiative along with ongoing firewall operations. This role is based on-site in Tulsa, OK and is critical to maintaining secure, efficient access across the organization while managing an increasing volume of firewall requests.

The engineer will support day-to-day firewall operations within a Check Point environment, including processing and implementing Requests for Firewall Services (RFS) through ServiceNow and executing changes via AlgoSec workflows. This individual will analyze incoming requests to determine existing access, identify potential risk, and ensure alignment with established security policies before implementing updates. In addition to operational responsibilities, the role requires direct interaction with business stakeholders to understand access requirements, improve the quality of requests, and communicate status updates effectively.

From a platform perspective, the engineer will work within a modern Check Point environment, including Maestro, supporting policy management, rule optimization, and overall firewall health. The environment is currently running a stable version of code and is planning an upgrade to R82, so exposure to firewall upgrades is a plus. The role will also support firewall-related efforts tied to the data center migration, including policy validation, cutover readiness, and post-migration stabilization to ensure minimal disruption to business operations.

The environment is fast-paced and high-volume, with over 600 firewall requests processed annually by a lean team of engineers, making the ability to ramp quickly and operate independently essential. In addition to core responsibilities, the organization is investing in internally developed tools and automation initiatives. Exposure to AI concepts, such as building or supporting agent-based workflows to streamline firewall request handling or policy validation, is considered a strong plus. Experience with Zscaler (ZIA/ZPA) is also beneficial as the organization continues to expand its security architecture.

The ideal candidate will have one to three years of hands-on experience with firewall or network security administration, including familiarity with Check Point environments and policy management. A Check Point CCSA certification is preferred but not required. Experience with AlgoSec, ServiceNow, or similar ticketing and automation platforms is highly desirable. Candidates should be comfortable working directly with business stakeholders, managing competing priorities, and operating in a regulated financial services environment where risk and compliance considerations are critical.

This is a strong opportunity for a junior-to-mid level firewall engineer to gain exposure to a modern Check Point stack, participate in a major infrastructure initiative, and grow into a long-term role within a stable and growing regional bank.
