Provo City accepts lateral transfer applications from current firefighter/paramedics in other agencies at any time.
Provo Fire & Rescue enjoys a cohesive and positive work environment with a strong desire to help each other succeed. The department has a state-of-the-art Heavy Rescue, two ladder trucks, two fire engines, five medic ambulances and three new type 6 brush trucks. The department also shows its commitment to fire-and-life-safety training by hosting monthly live fire, extrication, and EMS training. As the Provo City Airport has continued to expand commercial business, we have also expanded our airport firefighter operations. What is the compensation package? (placement based on qualifications)

Lateral Transfer Hiring Range: $67,722-$102,741

Firefighter/Paramedic (full career series): $64,458 - $102,741

(Annual ranges provided as a courtesy. Pay is hourly and paid in bi-weekly installments)

What are the main duties?

  • Responds to emergency and fire scenes.

  • Provides medical aid.

  • Participates in fire suppression activities and in hazardous materials operations.

  • Operates equipment and vehicles such as pumps, nozzles, ladders, hydrants, extinguishers, generators, etc.

  • Searches for and rescues victims from buildings, autos, mountains, etc.

  • Participates in post-emergency salvage operations and cleanup.

  • Assists in pre-fire planning and development of property maps and sketches.

  • Cleans and maintains firefighting equipment, station, and grounds.

  • Participates in drills and training sessions.

  • Assists in educating the public and performs other related duties as required.

Provo City firefighters work a 48/96 shift.

What is needed to apply?

  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED).

  • Current Paramedic License through the Utah State Bureau of EMS standards and have been employed in that capacity within the last 6 months.

  • Firefighter I & II certifications (NFPA and Utah Fire and Rescue Academy standards).

  • A valid, lawful Utah State driver license.

Lateral transfers may be brought in at the Firefighter/Paramedic, Senior Firefighter/Paramedic, or Master Firefighter/Paramedic level depending on qualifications.

  • Firefighter Paramedic - In addition to the minimum qualifications above, requires a minimum of 2 years of full-time experience as a medical response firefighter.

  • Senior Firefighter Paramedic - In addition to the minimum qualifications above, requires a minimum of 5 years of experience as a medical response firefighter, 2 years of which must have been as a certified paramedic; and ADO-A, ADO-P, Fire Instructor I, and Company Officer Inspector certifications.

  • Master Firefighter Paramedic - In addition to the minimum qualifications above, requires a minimum of 9 years of experience as a medical response firefighter. Requires the following certifications (NFPA and Utah Fire and Rescue Academy standards) at the time of appointment: Fire Instructor I, Fire Officer I, Fire Inspector I, Apparatus Driver Operator-Aerial (ADO-A), and Apparatus Driver Operator-Pump (ADO-P).

Lateral hires have 1 year from hire date to complete certificate and testing requirements.

Lateral hires can also be qualified as Engineers.

What is the selection process?

This is an open file posting. Applications will be reviewed in the order they are submitted for any positions available at that time. They will remain on file for a minimum of 60 days.

Provo City will certify a list of lateral candidates at the beginning of each month depending on the number of candidates and available positions. Candidates who meet the minimum requirements and any additional screening requirements must pass a physical test (CPAT) prior to being advanced to a Command Staff interview. Offers of employment are conditional upon successful completion of a background investigation and drug screening.
