What is a firearm design engineer?

A Firearm Design Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and testing firearms and related components. They use engineering principles, computer-aided design (CAD) software, and materials science to create safe, functional, and innovative weapon systems. Their work involves collaboration with manufacturing teams, compliance with industry regulations, and performance testing to ensure reliability and safety. Many Firearm Design Engineers have backgrounds in mechanical or aerospace engineering and a strong understanding of ballistics and materials.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a firearm design engineer?

To thrive as a Firearm Design Engineer, you need a strong background in mechanical engineering, materials science, and ballistics, usually supported by a relevant engineering degree. Expertise in CAD software, rapid prototyping, and knowledge of industry safety standards and compliance certifications are vital. Attention to detail, creative problem-solving, and strong collaboration skills help individuals excel in cross-functional teams. These capabilities are crucial to ensure innovative, reliable, and safe firearm designs that meet both technical specifications and regulatory requirements.

What are some common challenges faced by firearm design engineers during the development process?

Firearm Design Engineers often encounter challenges such as balancing innovation with strict safety and compliance standards, ensuring durability, and managing tight project timelines. Job description

Company Overview:

Gwynedd Manufacturing is a rapidly growing defense contractor and state-of-the-art manufacturing facility located in North Wales, PA. We are proud to serve the U.S. Department of Defense and federal law enforcement agencies with high-quality firearms and accessories. As an innovative and forward-thinking organization, we are committed to continuous technological advancement and process improvement.

Position Summary

We are seeking a Process Design Engineer with strong 3D modeling expertise and deep knowledge of ASME Y14.5 GD&T to support manufacturing, product improvements, and process troubleshooting. This is a hands-on, floor-engaged role focused on creating accurate models, drawings, and in-process documentation to ensure manufacturability and repeatable quality.

The ideal candidate is experienced, highly detail-oriented, and capable of working independently in a fast-paced environment where priorities change quickly. This role requires strong communication skills, the ability to translate vague or incomplete problem statements into actionable engineering solutions, and the ability to collaborate closely with manufacturing, quality, and other engineers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain 3D models, detailed drawings, and top-level assemblies using Inventor (NX a plus).
  • Apply ASME Y14.5 GD&T and perform tolerance stack-ups for parts, assemblies, and in-process operations.
  • Diagnose and resolve issues communicated by manufacturing or assembly personnel—even when information is incomplete (e.g., “it doesn’t work” or “something seems off”).
  • Work closely with machinists, assemblers, quality inspectors, and engineers to ensure drawings match real-world manufacturing processes.
  • Develop and maintain in-process drawing packages aligned with manufacturing sequences.
  • Design manufacturing fixtures, inspection fixtures, and other tooling as needed.
  • Update or revise drawings and models iteratively to reflect functional limits and solve production issues.
  • Collaborate closely with machinists, assemblers, inspectors, and engineers; communicate technical concepts clearly and respectfully.
  • Ensure models and drawings reflect manufacturing-friendly and CAM-friendly design practices.
