Job description

Position: Senior Tool Maker
Location: Troy, AL
Type: Full-time | On-site
Summary:
The Senior Tool Maker provides technical leadership for Tool Room operations and serves as the subject matter expert for manual and CNC machining, tooling, fixturing, and gage building. This role supports Engineering and Production, mentors tool room personnel, and drives tooling quality, standardization, and continuous improvement.
Essential Responsibilities:
  • Lead the fabrication, maintenance, modification, and installation of tooling, fixtures, jigs, gages, and production equipment.
  • Provide technical guidance, troubleshooting, and support for complex tooling and machining issues.
  • Review tooling and fixture designs to improve manufacturability, quality, safety, and efficiency.
  • Plan machine setups and machining operations to meet quality and delivery requirements.
  • Mentor tool room personnel and support complex setups and troubleshooting.
  • Maintain tooling documentation, CNC programs, calibration records, SOP compliance, and ERP/manufacturing database accuracy.
  • Ensure tooling, materials, and programs are organized to support repeatable manufacturing processes.
  • Operate and troubleshoot manual and CNC equipment, including lathes, mills, surface grinders, OD grinders, EDM, and Fanuc-controlled machines.
  • Support 5S, safety, continuous improvement initiatives, and work overtime/weekends as needed.

Qualifications:
  • Proven experience as a technical lead or mentor in a tool room environment.
  • Strong manual machining skills (turning, milling, grinding, precision fitting).
  • Extensive CNC machining experience, including setup, G-code programming, troubleshooting, MDI, and Fanuc controls.
  • Minimum 5 years of fixture design, build, and repair experience.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and GD&T.
  • Experience with work orders, ERP systems, and manufacturing documentation.
  • Knowledge of MasterCAM and firearms manufacturing is preferred.
  • Strong communication, organization, problem-solving, and ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment.

Education & Experience:
Required:
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • 10+ years of Tool Room experience.
  • 10+ years of CNC machining experience (setup, programming support, and troubleshooting).
  • 10+ years of manual machining experience.
  • 5+ years of fixture design, build, and repair experience.

Preferred:
  • Tool Maker Apprenticeship, Technical/Vocational Degree.
  • Lean manufacturing experience.
