What is a firefighter?

Firefighters are trained professionals who respond to emergencies involving fires, accidents, and other disasters. Their primary responsibilities include extinguishing fires, rescuing people and animals from dangerous situations, and providing first aid. Firefighters also work to prevent fires through public education, inspections, and safety drills. They often collaborate with other emergency responders, such as police officers and paramedics, to ensure public safety.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a firefighter, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Firefighter, you need physical fitness, knowledge of fire safety protocols, and completion of fire academy training, often supported by EMT certification. Familiarity with firefighting equipment, emergency communication systems, and hazardous materials handling is typically required. Strong teamwork, resilience under pressure, and effective communication are crucial soft skills in this role. These skills and qualities are vital for ensuring quick, safe, and coordinated responses to emergencies, protecting lives and property.

What are some common challenges faced by firefighters during emergency response, and how can new hires prepare for them?

Firefighters often encounter unpredictable and high-pressure situations, such as rapidly changing fire conditions, hazardous materials, and complex rescues. New hires should be prepared for physically demanding work, long shifts, and the emotional impact of witnessing traumatic events. Developing strong teamwork, communication, and continuous training in safety protocols can help new firefighters adapt and perform effectively alongside experienced colleagues.

Both require emergency response certifications and work within public safety sectors, but their daily tasks and work environments differ significantly.

Experienced Fire Protection Technicians

Fire Alarm | Vehicle Fire Suppression | Fire Extinguishers | Emergency Lighting | Marine | Kitchen Suppression | Special Hazards

Your fire protection experience should be recognized - in the work you do, the way you're paid, and the career you can build without leaving the community you call home.

Everguard Fire Safety is growing our Quebec team and creating opportunities for experienced fire protection technicians across multiple disciplines. We're looking for skilled, safety-minded technicians who take pride in quality work, customer service, and building a long-term career in fire and life safety. Depending on the role, location, client needs, and your preference, work may include:

  • Local day trips near your home community
  • Overnight travel across Quebec or nearby regions
  • Rotational assignments for technicians who prefer that structure

You do not necessarily need to relocate to grow with Everguard.

  • Competitive base wage aligned to your experience and discipline
  • Overtime paid separately - not hidden inside a blended rate
  • Travel, shift, remote-site, and on-call premiums where applicable
  • Paid on-call where applicable
  • Paid vacation and flex time in addition to wages, per policy
  • Health, dental, and insurance coverage
  • Employer-matched retirement savings
  • Paid holidays
  • Paid training and professional development
  • Employee and Family Assistance Program
  • Stable, year-round work with a safety-first culture

Career growth and respect

At Everguard, your experience matters. You'll be part of a national fire and life safety business built around Safety, Quality, Customer Service, and Respect. We invest in training, mentorship, and development so technicians can continue building their skills, expand into new disciplines, mentor others, or grow into future lead and leadership opportunities.

What you'll do

You'll work across commercial, industrial, mining, institutional, and other customer sites, installing, inspecting, testing, maintaining, repairing, and certifying fire protection equipment and systems aligned with your experience and training. Responsibilities may include:

  • Inspecting and maintaining fire protection equipment and systems
  • Performing mechanical and/or electrical testing
  • Repairing, replacing, and certifying components
  • Reading and interpreting drawings, specifications, and manuals
  • Evaluating customer needs and recommending practical solutions
  • Completing documentation, reports, and daily work records
  • Communicating professionally with customers and internal teams
  • Mentoring junior technicians where appropriate
  • Participating in overtime, travel, or on-call rotations as required

What you bring

  • 2+ years of field experience inspecting, testing, maintaining, repairing, or installing fire protection equipment or systems
  • Experience in one or more fire protection disciplines, such as fire alarm, vehicle fire suppression, fire extinguishers, emergency lighting, marine, kitchen suppression, or special hazards
  • Strong mechanical and/or electrical aptitude
  • A safety-first mindset and strong attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently, professionally, and with customers
  • Valid driver's licence
  • Willingness to travel, work at remote sites, and participate in overtime or on-call work where required

If you do not meet every qualification but have solid fire protection experience, we still encourage you to apply.
