Job DescriptionOverview

The Engineering Services Division is seeking a Senior Fire Protection Specialist to support a range of projects across Canada. Our team delivers fire protection engineering services for major infrastructure programs in the nuclear, defence, rail, and critical facilities sectors.

This role is well suited to an innovative, technically strong professional who can apply fire protection principles and fire safety science to deliver practical, code-compliant solutions for the built environment. The position involves direct engagement with clients, regulators, and multidisciplinary project teams, and offers opportunities for technical leadership and mentoring. As a client-facing role, it requires strong communication, coordination, and project management skills.

Your role
  • Lead the design and delivery of fire suppression and fire alarm systems, including the preparation of drawings, calculations, specifications, and technical reports.

  • Develop fire protection engineering studies, system narratives, and compliance documentation.

  • Participate in field reviews, inspections, on-site engineering testing, and commissioning activities.

  • Coordinate fire protection scope with architectural, structural, mechanical, electrical, and process engineering teams as part of integrated project delivery.

  • Represent AtkinsRealis' fire protection discipline in discussions with clients, regulators, project partners, and other key stakeholders.

  • Provide technical leadership on complex, multidisciplinary projects.

  • Mentor and support the development of junior engineers, specialists, and technologists.

  • Contribute to continuous improvement, best practices, and knowledge sharing across the fire protection team.

About you
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Diploma in Fire Protection Engineering Technology, or related discipline.

  • Registration as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) or membership with a recognized engineering or technical association is an asset.

  • 5 - 10+ years of experience in fire protection engineering, including experience independently preparing technical reports that clearly define objectives, methodology, findings, and recommendations with minimal guidance from senior team members.

  • Experience in nuclear fire protection engineering and familiarity with CSA standards (e.g., CSA N293, N393) is an asset.

  • Working knowledge of the NBCC, NFCC, provincial codes, and applicable fire protection standards, including UL, NFPA, CSA, and CAN/ULC standards. Hands-on experience applying NFPA 13, 14, 15, 20, and 24 is required. UL Solutions Integrated System Testing Certification for CAN/ULC-S1001 is an asset.

  • Ability to clearly communicate complex technical concepts to non-technical audiences and senior stakeholders. Proven ability to manage differing viewpoints, present sound engineering positions, collaborate across multidisciplinary project teams, and maintain a professional, solution-focused approach.

  • Proficiency in CADD, Revit, AutoSPRINK, and/or HydraCAD.

  • Eligibility to obtain and maintain federal security clearance.

  • Valid driver's license.
