Job description

  • Plan, organize, administer, and coordinate all activities of the Fire Department
  • Establish departmental policies, procedures, and regulations for firefighting, medical emergencies, rescue operations, fire prevention, fire training, and safety programs
  • Prepare the department's annual budget and recommend capital improvements, including station maintenance and upgrades, fire apparatus, and specialized equipment
  • Supervise all department employees directly or through subordinate supervisors
  • Perform administrative duties, maintain documentation, attend meetings, update records, and write reports
  • Prepare, monitor, and administer departmental or organizational budgets
  • Coordinate acquisition and implementation of external funding such as grants
  • Assume responsibility at emergency scenes and implement the incident command system
  • Engage in professional development and maintain knowledge of relevant practices, rules, laws, policies, and guidelines
  • Supervise and participate in public-facing trainings, tours, and community activities
  • Manage department operations by developing and updating policies and procedures, evaluating programs, and researching emergency medical and fire-field trends
  • Assign and distribute work, direct staff, monitor progress, and provide feedback or training
Requirements
  • Driver's license
  • Current State firefighter minimum standard certification
  • Current Fire Officer III Certification
  • Bachelor's degree in Fire Science, Business, Public Administration, EMS or closely related field (Option A)
  • Three (3) years of supervisory experience at the rank of Fire Captain (or higher) overseeing an assigned fire station or division (Option A)
  • Graduate level degree in Fire Science, Business, Public Administration, EMS or closely related field (Option B)
  • Five (5) years of supervisory experience serving at the rank of Fire Lieutenant (or higher) (Option B)
  • Paramedic License (preferred)
  • Ability to perform physical activities including lifting, carrying, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling
  • Occasional lifting of items or objects weighing up to 50 lbs.
  • Physical ability to combat/extinguish fires, respond to emergency medical calls, and deliver patient care
  • Ability to work in office and field environments and exposure to hazardous weather, roadway traffic, infectious diseases, and angry/irate citizens
