Job description
Torus is headquartered in Utah and is expanding manufacturing at our 540,000-square-foot facility in Salt Lake City called GigaOne. Our mission is to build the world's first mesh energy infrastructure - built to unite people and communities through resilient, secure, and intelligent power. We design, engineer, manufacture, install, and support our systems end-to-end, standing behind them throughout their lifecycle. Torus systems help reduce costs, lower emissions, and protect facilities from outages, while strengthening the security and reliability of the broader utility grid. Torus is committed to American manufacturing, engineering excellence, and building energy systems that last.
At Torus, you will be part of something larger than a single product or technology. Your work will help build energy infrastructure that supports critical systems, industry, and communities for decades to come. We value accountability, collaboration, and clear thinking. We are looking for people who want to solve hard problems and build things that matter.
About the Role
The Director of HSE (Health, Safety, and Environment) & Facilities is a senior leadership role responsible for the strategic direction, management, and continuous improvement of all health, safety, and environmental programs, as well as the full scope of facilities operations - including building maintenance, equipment maintenance, custodial services, and grounds management. This individual ensures regulatory compliance, fosters a culture of safety, and maintains a high-performing, well-maintained physical environment that supports organizational objectives.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Leadership & Administration
- Build, lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing HSE & Facilities team, including hiring, training, performance management, and succession planning.
- Develop and manage the annual HSE & Facilities budget, including operating expenses and capital expenditure planning and execution.
- Own communications with senior leadership on HSE performance, facilities condition, associated projects status, and budget performance.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with Operations, Engineering, Human Resources, Finance, and other departments to align HSE and facilities strategies with business objectives.
- Stay current with industry best practices, emerging regulations, and new technologies in HSE and facilities management.
- Champion sustainability and energy efficiency initiatives to reduce the organization's environmental footprint and operating costs.
Health, Safety & Environmental (HSE)
- Develop, implement, and continuously improve company-wide HSE policies, programs, and procedures in compliance with OSHA, EPA, and all applicable federal, state, and local regulations.
- Lead the organization's safety culture initiatives, driving engagement and accountability at every level especially electrical safety.
- Oversee hazard identification, risk assessments, job hazard analyses (JHAs), and the implementation of effective controls.
- Direct incident investigation processes, root cause analyses, and corrective/preventive action plans.
- Establish robust contractor management safety protocols supporting both production and field service operations.
- Manage all environmental compliance programs, including air quality, water discharge, waste management, hazardous materials handling, and sustainability initiatives.
- Serve as the primary liaison with regulatory agencies (OSHA, EPA, state environmental agencies, fire marshals, etc.) during inspections, audits, and permitting processes.
- Develop and oversee emergency preparedness and response plans, including fire prevention, evacuation procedures, spill response, and business continuity planning.
- Establish and track leading and lagging HSE key performance indicators (KPIs), including Total Recordable Incident Rate (TRIR), Days Away/Restricted/Transfer (DART), near-miss reporting, safety observations, and environmental metrics.
- Manage workers' compensation programs in partnership with Human Resources and insurance carriers.
- Direct all HSE training programs, ensuring timely completion and documentation of required training (e.g., HAZWOPER, lockout/tagout, confined space, fall protection, PPE, respiratory protection).
Facilities Management Responsibilities
- Oversee all aspects of facilities operations across company properties, including buildings, grounds, infrastructure, and utility systems.
- Lead the planning, utilities, fitout, and contractor management of new building construction, e.g., GigaOne.
- Develop and manage preventive and predictive maintenance programs for all building systems (including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, roofing, fire suppression, and security systems), production equipment (e.g. CNC laser cutters, CNC benders, VTLs) and logistics (e.g., forklifts, trucks, trailers).
- Direct equipment maintenance programs, ensuring reliability, uptime, and lifecycle management of production and support equipment. Incorporate an effective asset management system to drive coordinated equipment and tooling maintenance and uptime.
- Manage custodial and janitorial services, ensuring cleanliness, sanitation, and professional presentation of all facilities.
- Oversee grounds maintenance, parking areas, exterior lighting, signage, and landscaping.
- Lead capital improvement projects, renovations, and new construction efforts, managing scope, budgets, and timelines.
- Negotiate and manage contracts with external vendors, service providers, and contractors for maintenance, cleaning, security, waste removal, and specialized services.
- Ensure all facilities meet applicable building codes, ADA requirements, fire codes, and occupancy standards.
- Manage space planning and allocation to support operational needs and organizational growth.
- Oversee facility security systems, access control, and related protocols.
Required Experience
- Minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in HSE, facilities management, or a combination of both, with at least 5 years in a leadership/management role.
- Demonstrated experience managing multi-site or large-scale facility operations.
- Proven track record of building and sustaining a strong safety culture with measurable results.
- Experience managing capital projects, budgets of $5M+, and cross-functional teams.
- Expert knowledge of OSHA, EPA, NFPA, and other relevant regulatory frameworks.
- Strong understanding of building systems (HVAC, electrical, plumbing, fire/life safety) and equipment maintenance best practices.
- Proficiency with CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management Systems), EHS management software, and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills with the ability to influence at all organizational levels.
- Strong project management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
- Analytical mindset with the ability to use data to drive decisions and continuous improvement.
- Financial acumen for budget development, cost analysis, and resource allocation.
- Crisis management and decision-making capabilities under pressure.
Preferred Certifications
- Certified Safety Professional (CSP)
- Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH)
- Certified Facility Manager (CFM) or Facility Management Professional (FMP)
- OSHA 30-Hour (General Industry and/or Construction)
- Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM)
- LEED Accredited Professional (LEED AP)
You'll be a great fit at Torus if you're motivated by building durable systems and taking responsibility for how they perform in the field. This role is well suited for a Director of HSE & Facilities who enjoys working through ambiguity, collaborating closely across teams, and solving practical problems that directly impact product reliability and performance.
