Duties * Performs firefighting and rescue operations. * Assigned to a crew engaged in structural firefighting, rescue, Hazardous Materials (HAZMAT) incident response functions. * Performs noninvasive emergency medical procedures to provide Basic Life Support (BLS). * Responds to hazardous material incidents. * Drives and operates firefighting/rescue vehicles, participates in rescue operations to include confined space, high-angle, and other special operations. Requirements Conditions of employment * This position requires the completion of pre-employment and periodic subsequent medical examination in accordance with DoDM 6055.06 to ensure continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position. * This position has a requirement to lift up to 40 lbs. in the regular performance of duties. * The duties of this position meet the criteria for compliance with Federal and Department of the Army Drug Free Workplace Programs. Detection of the presence of drugs is warranted. * This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident. * This position has been designated Mission Essential. In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations. * In accordance with AR 690-11, this position has been designated as "Key" and shall not be vacated during a national emergency or mobilization as doing so would seriously impair the capability of the organization to function effectively. * As a "Key" position, the incumbent must be exempted from recall to active duty and will receive training to ensure mission accomplishment of sustaining base operations during mobilization. * This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations. Employee shifts are rotated on a regularly scheduled basis; 48-hour rotating shifts with a work schedule of 144 hours per pay period. * Due to the nature of this position, employees are required to work both planned and unscheduled overtime. * The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles. * This position requires the incumbent to conform to the requirements set-forth in the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1500, Fire Department Occupational Health and Safety Program. * Incumbent must obtain a government driver's license. * Must participate in the Department Wellness Program to include: annual physical examinations and on the spot drug screening. * This position requires you to work 72-hour work weeks / 144-hours per pay period. Overtime may be mandatory. * Incumbent is subject to periodic travel. * Incumbent is subject to recall after normal tour in cases of emergencies. * This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required. * Appointment to this position is subject to a one year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 11. While probationary the incumbent can be terminated with limited appeal rights. * Local certification requirements are Telecommunicator 1 and 2 which will be obtained on the job. Specialized Experience GS-05: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1) Assisting with fire suppression and rescue activities and 2) Performing firefighting functions This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04). OR Education: Four years of education above the high school level in an accredited college or university in Fire Science, Fire Training, Paramedicine, or other related fields of study. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education by 120. Add the two percentages. Specialized Experience GS-06: One year of specialized experience which includes:1) Controlling or extinguishing fires performing rescue operations; 2) Detecting, reducing, and/or eliminating potential fire hazards; 3) Performing fire prevention inspection and training; and 4) Controlling hazardous materials incidents This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/ level position in the federal service (GS-05). Specialized Experience GS-07: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1) Performing fire suppression and emergency responses duties involving structural fires and hazardous material incidents; 2) Operating firefighting vehicles and equipment during firefighting and rescue operations; and 3) Providing basic life support and emergency care or injured or ill individuals; and 4) Controlling hazardous materials incidents. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06). Along with the specialized experience listed above, there are required certifications that will be needed prior to entry for each grade level. An employee originally hired into a covered position must be hired by the last day of the month he/she reaches 37. Maximum Reentry Age An employee who previously served on a covered position may be rehired past the MEA as long as he/she is able to complete 20 years of covered service by his/her mandatory retirement age. The maximum re-entry age for the individual is calculated by determining the total amount of time he/she has served on a covered position and subtracting that from age 57 if a firefighter. The employee's current age is compared to the calculated maximum re-entry age to determine if he/she can be rehired into the covered position. Education GS-05: FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
