Job Description
AECOM is actively seeking a talented and highly motivated Fire Protection Engineer with a PE license for immediate employment in our Tampa, FL office. This position will work within the Building & Places (B+P) organization and will provide engineering expertise in relation to Buildings, Facilities, or other structures within B+P. AECOM's Buildings + Places practice includes architecture, interiors, building engineering, workplace strategy, master planning, urban planning, civil engineering, and landscape architecture. Our Tampa office includes all disciplines and regularly works across offices and the region.
This Fire Protection position is a senior engineering role and presents an opportunity for a candidate to excel in their expertise and contribute to growing our Fire Protection and Life Safety Engineering team expertise, leadership, and mentoring opportunity. The position will also provide for growth in client relationships and internal relationships across offices and region. The position will report to the discipline manager and will have demonstrated capability to work independently to lead building and facility projects and teams. The position is expected to lead projects and teams and have responsibility for delivering projects timely and completely. Additionally, the position has opportunity to develop to a managing position based on individual experience and capability. AECOM actively supports continued education, training, and innovations in professional development, encouraging employees to gain new industry insights and value for our clients.
Ideal candidates have a strong background and interest in vertical building development, having the ability to be part of a collaborative project team, be client-focused, and produce great works. This individual will participate in all aspects from project analysis through concept and final designs and providing support activities during construction.
The job responsibilities for the position will include, but may not be limited to, the following:
  • Serving as lead fire protection engineer for designs on a variety of building project types, including mid-to large size architecture and facility projects.
  • Able to organize workload and work independently on project-specific design tasks and lead staff and client communications.
  • Able to communicate and present with clients and discuss/explain technical solutions to project conditions.
  • Project meetings and coordinating with the Architect of Record and Project Manager
  • Performing quality control reviews of work developed by others.
  • Providing technical input to studies and design and expertise for staff's specific areas of expertise/assignment.
  • Coordinate scope, schedule, budget in working with project managers and other senior level team members.
  • Versed in technical software related to industry expertise for design, calculation, modeling, and documentation.
  • Fully versed in relevant life safety, code, and relevant governing standards related to the project, location, and best practices.
  • Mentoring and providing guidance to junior level staff for design approach and specific technical design aspects (design tools, analysis, standards, design, and calculations, etc.).
  • Participating in development of technical proposals (including estimates for the engineering budget and schedule)
  • Reviewing permitting agency/engineering standards and regulations necessary to develop proper project design and permitting applications.
  • Work closely with other departments from the AECOM project teams or offices to provide value and partner in project opportunities.
  • Participating and supporting site investigations and construction related activities.

Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:
  • Bachelors degree in Engineering plus 8 years of relevant experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education.
  • Registration as a Licensed Professional Engineer in the State of Florida (current FL PE License).
  • Experience in leading engagement and interface with client teams.
  • Experience using relevant software required in design, calculation, and execution of project designs.
  • Experience preparing calculations and design documents (reports, plans, specifications).
  • Experience in organizing and delivering projects and milestones in timely and accurate manner.
  • In-depth experience with construction phase services for projects (field reviews, RFI and shop drawing/submittal reviews, specifications, as-builts and record drawings, etc.).
  • Demonstrated experience with permitting projects, and interaction with authorities having jurisdiction.
  • Valid US Driver's License required, as a condition of employment must pass AECOM's motor vehicle records review.
  • Due to the nature of the work, US Citizenship is required.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's/Master's degree in fire protection engineering is preferred.
  • Experience as lead fire protection engineer for building and facility building projects.
  • 10 years of experience, in fire protection engineering covering all aspects of life safety and fire protection for building/facility design, having demonstrated management responsibilities.
  • Experience with and understanding of other building system engineering, such as HVAC and plumbing design is a plus.
  • Experience working in large and complex projects/programs.
  • Experience on municipal, federal, and DOD projects and programs.
