Fire Protection Engineer Internship information

What does a fire protection engineer intern do?

A Fire Protection Engineer Intern assists in designing, reviewing, and testing systems that help prevent or control fires in buildings and other structures. Typical tasks may include working with senior engineers to create fire suppression and detection system layouts, conducting site inspections, performing code research, and helping prepare technical reports. Interns gain hands-on experience with industry standards and regulations, while developing skills in safety analysis and fire risk assessment. This role is ideal for students pursuing a degree in fire protection, mechanical, or civil engineering.

What types of projects and tasks can I expect to work on during a fire protection engineer internship?

As a Fire Protection Engineer Intern, you can expect to support senior engineers on a variety of projects, such as assisting with fire risk assessments, preparing fire safety plans, and performing calculations for sprinkler and alarm systems. You may also review building codes, participate in site inspections, and help draft technical reports. Interns often collaborate closely with multidisciplinary teams, including architects and mechanical engineers, gaining exposure to both design and fieldwork aspects of fire protection. This hands-on experience is valuable for building foundational skills and understanding the practical applications of fire protection engineering.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a fire protection engineer intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Fire Protection Engineer Intern, you generally need a background in engineering (often in fire protection, mechanical, or civil engineering), strong analytical skills, and coursework related to fire safety principles. Familiarity with design software like AutoCAD, modeling tools, and knowledge of building and fire codes are typically required, and internships may prefer students pursuing a relevant degree. Strong communication, attention to detail, and teamwork skills help interns collaborate effectively and interpret complex safety standards. These abilities are crucial for ensuring fire safety solutions are both compliant and practical, supporting the well-being of people and property.

What is the difference between Fire Protection Engineer Internship vs Fire Protection Engineer?

AspectFire Protection Engineer InternshipFire Protection Engineer
Required CredentialsEnrolled in or recent graduate of engineering or fire safety programBachelor's or master's in fire protection engineering; professional licensure often preferred
Work EnvironmentInternship settings, often in engineering firms or construction sitesFull-time professional roles in design, analysis, and safety assessments
Employer & Industry UsageInternship programs in engineering firms, government agencies, or construction companiesEngineering firms, consulting companies, government agencies, and industrial facilities

The Fire Protection Engineer Internship is an entry-level position designed for students or recent graduates gaining practical experience. In contrast, a Fire Protection Engineer is a full-time professional responsible for designing and implementing fire safety systems. Internships provide foundational exposure, while full engineers take on comprehensive projects and responsibilities.

Is there a high demand for fire protection engineer interns?

Fire protection engineer internships are in moderate demand as companies seek interns with knowledge of fire safety codes, CAD software, and risk assessment. Opportunities are often available in engineering firms, construction, and safety consulting, especially for students pursuing relevant certifications or degrees. The demand can vary based on industry growth and regional safety regulations.

Position Overview

This is a senior technical leadership opportunity for an experienced plumbing and fire protection engineer ready to lead complex building systems projects from concept through construction. As Lead Plumbing & Fire Protection Design Engineer, you will provide design oversight, technical direction, quality control, and mentorship across sophisticated projects throughout New York City and surrounding markets.

This role is ideal for an engineer who brings deep knowledge of domestic water, sanitary, stormwater, natural gas, specialty plumbing, fire sprinkler, standpipe, fire pump, and water-service systems. You will work directly with architects, owners, contractors, utilities, public agencies, and multidisciplinary engineering teams while helping strengthen the firm's plumbing and fire protection practice.

Core Responsibilities

  • Lead the planning, design, analysis, and documentation of plumbing and fire protection systems for new construction, renovations, infrastructure upgrades, and repositioning projects
  • Establish design criteria, system concepts, technical approaches, and project-specific engineering standards
  • Direct the design of domestic water, domestic hot water, sanitary waste and vent, stormwater, natural gas, medical gas, laboratory plumbing, acid waste, grease waste, fuel oil, compressed air, backflow prevention, booster pump, and specialty plumbing systems
  • Lead fire protection design for automatic sprinkler systems, standpipes, fire pumps, fire department connections, fire protection water services, water-storage tanks, and special-hazard coordination
  • Perform and review fixture-unit calculations, pipe sizing, pressure-loss calculations, hot-water demand, gas-load calculations, drainage calculations, hydraulic sprinkler calculations, standpipe calculations, and fire pump sizing
  • Evaluate system alternatives for performance, efficiency, resilience, maintainability, lifecycle cost, code compliance, and constructability
  • Integrate water conservation, energy efficiency, sustainability, and resiliency strategies into plumbing design, including low-flow fixtures, water reuse, rainwater harvesting, heat recovery, and LEED/WELL or Local Law-related requirements
  • Serve as the senior plumbing and fire protection technical authority on assigned projects
  • Work closely with Project Managers to define scope, schedule, budget, staffing, deliverables, and technical milestones
  • Lead projects from feasibility and due diligence through design, agency approvals, bidding, construction administration, commissioning, and closeout
  • Direct engineers, designers, BIM/Revit professionals, and technical support staff
  • Coordinate with mechanical, electrical, fire alarm, architectural, structural, civil, lighting, technology, security, and specialty-consultant teams
  • Participate in BIM coordination, clash-detection reviews, design workshops, milestone reviews, and project meetings
  • Ensure designs comply with NYC Plumbing Code, NYC Building Code, NYC Fire Code, NYC Fuel Gas Code, NYC Energy Conservation Code, NFPA 13, NFPA 14, NFPA 20, NFPA 24, NFPA 25, and applicable owner standards
  • Support NYC Department of Buildings submissions, objections, responses, approvals, and agency coordination with FDNY, NYC DEP, utilities, and authorities having jurisdiction
  • Prepare and review drawings, riser diagrams, schedules, details, specifications, calculations, technical narratives, filing drawings, and supporting documentation
  • Lead existing-condition surveys, feasibility studies, condition assessments, due-diligence reports, and infrastructure-upgrade recommendations
  • Develop phasing and temporary-service strategies for renovations in occupied buildings
  • Lead QA/QC reviews to verify code compliance, system sizing, coordination, constructability, and technical completeness
  • Review shop drawings, equipment submittals, sprinkler calculations, product data, substitutions, contractor proposals, RFIs, change-order requests, and closeout documents
