Description The Department of Transportation and Public Works has an immediate opening for a Mechanical Inspector. This position is responsible for performing inspections of mechanic equipment systems and components, special mechanical equipment, and/or related sites to determine compliance with applicable codes, ordinances, standards, plans, and specifications. The typical work hours will be from 7:00 am - 3:30 pm, Monday - Friday.

To learn more County benefits, please visit: Saint Louis County Employee Benefits Examples of Duties Inspects and evaluates mechanical construction/installation by visually inspecting and evaluating the performance and safe installation and operation of commercial, industrial and residential HVAC, piping, lifting and moving, and other mechanical systems and equipment, Evaluating blueprints and specifications. Enforces codes and standards for mechanical construction and installation by: Reading and interpreting construction/installation drawings, specifications and plans Evaluating HVAC equipment/systems and installations, boilers and other fuel fired appliances, pressure vessels, refrigeration systems, air compressors, generators, various lifting and moving devices, exhaust systems and fireplaces, hot water tanks, gas and hydronic piping, crematories and incinerators, carnival rides, and fire suppression and smoke removal systems for safe and effective operations, as required by codes, regulations, ordinances and other applicable requirements Verifying mechanical work is performed under proper license Reviewing facilities for proper building maintenance and compliance with zoning requirements Issuing non-conformance and violation notices and stop work orders, as required, to correct non-compliant installation of mechanical systems and services.
Communicates inspection findings to supervisors, contractors, operators and others by discussing problems and deficiencies found; investigating and resolving complaints; providing technical assistance in person or by telephone; preparing inspection reports, log entries and summaries; writing notices and preparing for license violation hearings and court cases. Prepares for inspection work by accepting work assignments and communicating with management via computer and telephone; planning and scheduling the work to carry out assignments efficiently and in timely fashion; learning the applicable codes (ASME, SMACNA, County and other codes), regulations, requirements, and Public Works Practices and Procedures applicable to the work and attending training. Performs technical work in the inspection of construction alteration and safety of elevators, escalators, and other related devices for compliance with codes and regulations.
Ensures installations or alterations are in conformity with plans and are incompliance with code. Performs such other work, with the required abilities and under the indicated working conditions and environment, as may properly be required of a position in this job class. Equipment used: PC workstation; tape measure/measuring wheel Working conditions: Balance, bend at the waist, climb or work on stairs and ladders; exposure to dust/dirt, fumes and hazardous materials; kneel, reach above shoulder level, stand or walk for long periods; walk on uneven ground; work from bucket trucks.
Minimum Qualifications Five years of increasingly responsible experience in the mechanical / heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) trade; completion of a formal course of training as a mechanical or HVAC apprentice;or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Possession of a current, valid driver's license. Applicants possessing previous experience in the elevator trade may be given preference.
Additional Information SELECTION AND APPOINTMENT: A selection committee will evaluate the qualifications of each applicant which will include recentness and appropriateness of the applicant's education and experience, answers to the supplemental questions, results of employment references investigated and any other appropriate information available. The selection committee will admit to the interview only those persons who possess the most job-related qualifications and may establish admittance criteria beyond the minimum qualifications stated above. The interview will comprise 100% of the applicant's earned grade.
A candidate must earn a qualifying grade of 70 or more on the interview to be eligible for appointment. After initial interviews with the selected candidates are conducted, an email will be sent to the address on file with instructions on how to complete and submit a Conviction Questionnaire. Candidates have 3 days to complete the required questionnaire.
The five top ranking candidates, based on the final grade, will be certified to the Department Director/Appointing Authority who will make the final decision. All applicants conditionally offered a merit position will be required to submit to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Screening will be performed by a reputable clinical laboratory.
