What Is a Fire Inspector?
A fire inspector is responsible for inspecting existing and new buildings to ensure that they are up to code and do not present any fire hazards. It is a fire inspector’s job to test and examine fire prevention measures, such as fire alarms, sprinkler systems, and evacuation plans. A large company may perform a fire safety drill for the inspector to oversee and provide feedback. For new building projects, a fire inspector supervises and approves fire prevention measures to ensure they meet state regulations. The job of fire inspector should not be confused with that of fire investigator. An investigator examines extinguished fires to find the source. An inspector examines buildings to prevent a fire from starting.
What is the difference between Fire Inspector vs Fire Investigator?
| Aspect | Fire Inspector | Fire Investigator |
|---|---|---|
| Certifications | Fire Inspector Certification, State Fire Marshal License | Fire Investigator Certification, State Fire Marshal License |
| Work Environment | Inspections of buildings, code enforcement, safety assessments | Investigating fire causes, scene analysis, evidence collection |
| Employer & Industry | Fire departments, government agencies, commercial properties | Fire departments, law enforcement, insurance companies |
| Primary Focus | Preventing fires, ensuring code compliance | Determining fire origin and cause |
While both Fire Inspectors and Fire Investigators work within fire safety, Fire Inspectors focus on prevention and code enforcement through building inspections, whereas Fire Investigators analyze fire scenes to determine causes. Their roles often overlap but serve different stages of fire safety and investigation processes.

Job description
At Encore Fire Protection, we are proud to be the east coast's largest full-service fire protection company, serving over 90,000 customers from Maine to Louisiana. With a team of over 2,200 dedicated employees, we provide innovative, customized fire suppression, fire sprinkler, and fire alarm solutions that protect lives and properties every day.
Our goal is to deliver superior experience to those who trust us to safeguard what matters most. We are passionate about continuous growth, innovation, and maintaining a culture that thrives on success and commitment to safety. Our mission? To be the best fire protection company the industry has ever seen.
As a Sprinkler Inspector, you will be part of our Advanced Test and Inspection Department and play a key role in making sure life safety systems perform the way they are designed to when it matters most. You will inspect, test, and maintain a wide range of sprinkler and suppression systems and help customers stay in compliance with NFPA 25 and local regulations.
This role is a good fit for someone who is steady, detail-focused, and comfortable working in the field. You will spend your time at customer sites, checking equipment, verifying operation, documenting what you find, and talking with customers about the condition of their systems and any next steps.
If you like clear expectations, hands-on work, and knowing that what you do each day directly impacts safety and reliability in the buildings you visit, you will do well here.
You are the person walking a building with a gauge in one hand and an inspection report in the other, spotting the valve that is not quite right or the test that does not pass. You value clear standards, honest results, and turning what you see in the riser room into simple next steps for the customer. In this role, you will:
- Perform inspections, testing, and routine maintenance on fire sprinkler systems in line with NFPA 25 and local regulations.
- Evaluate system performance, verify that devices, valves, and control assemblies are operating properly, and record test results accurately.
- Identify code deficiencies, potential hazards, and system impairments and provide clear recommendations for repairs or corrective actions.
- Coordinate inspection schedules with customers, contractors, and building maintenance personnel and communicate findings in a straightforward way.
- Work with the Advanced Test and Inspection team and Deficiency Sales team to help customers move from inspection findings to timely, compliant repairs or upgrades.
- Respond to service calls or emergency needs including occasional night, weekend, or short notice work when customer needs arise and assist with basic troubleshooting and minor repairs.
- Maintain company tools, testing equipment, and your vehicle in clean, organized, and reliable condition.
- Follow all safety procedures and company policies while representing Encore with professionalism and integrity on every job site.
- Minimum three years of experience inspecting or maintaining fire sprinkler systems
- High school diploma or equivalent; trade school or technical training preferred
- Strong working knowledge of NFPA 25, NFPA 13, and applicable building and fire codes
- Ability to read blueprints, riser diagrams, and system schematics
- Solid mechanical aptitude and attention to detail when working with valves, piping, and system components
- Clear written and verbal communication skills for reporting, documentation, and customer conversations
- Proven ability to work independently and manage your time effectively in a field-based role
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record
- A willingness to work occasional overtime, weekends, or nights as needed to support customer or emergency needs
What Makes You Stand Out
- You hold NICET certification in water-based systems for inspection, testing, or layout.
- You have additional technical training in fire protection, sprinkler systems, or related trade.
- You have experience inspecting both sprinklers and special hazard or suppression systems.
- You have prior experience working closely with deficiency sales or service teams to transition inspection findings into repair work.
At Encore, we’re all about creating a culture where success is celebrated. We recognize that our work makes people’s lives safer, and we reward those who contribute to our growth. Here’s what you can expect:
- Competitive Pay: Hourly rate based on experience with a performance-based bonus opportunity.
- Tuition Assistance: Paid tuition for fire protection-related schooling needed to obtain licensing.
- Purpose-Driven Work Environment: We believe in working smarter, not harder. You’ll be part of a culture that values results, and we empower our team to focus on impactful work.
- Swag: High-quality company swag and attire (t-shirts, hoodies, jackets) – at least twice a year.
- People-Focused Culture: We know our greatest strength is our people. That’s why we’ve built a culture that encourages experimentation, learning, and improving together. You’ll have the space to share your ideas and help shape a company that is constantly growing.
- Tools for Success: Access to leading-edge web-based productivity tools.
- Health and Wellness: Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage to keep you and your family healthy.
- Retirement Planning: Participation in our Fidelity 401(k) plan with a company match, helping you save for your future.
- Life Insurance: Company-paid life insurance policy of $50,000 to give you peace of mind.
