Brief Description

Job SummaryWithin broad parameters and in accordance with general organizational requirements and accepted practices, conducts fire department training, ensures current and effective training, and performs Training division administrative duties. Coordinates, implements, and delivers fire department training programs and activities. Works with Chief of Training to evaluate the effectiveness of the training program to achieve departmental goals. Supervises and evaluates recruits during orientation program to ensure proficiency in firefighting, medical, special operations, and community risk reduction skills. Coordinates and supervises the training activities of Platoon Training Officers. Supervises the delivery of training programs and evaluates performance of Fire Department personnel during training activities. Ensures accuracy of data through records management. Researches training programs, develops new training curricula, and researches new available technology for tools and equipment. Conducts annual testing of all apparatus in coordination with the Chief Fire Mechanic. Responsible for operations, organization, and upkeep of department training grounds. Serves on committees and task groups as assigned. Serves on-call on a rotating basis to provide logistical support to Fire Suppression during emergency and non-emergency situations. Assumes duties of the Chief of Training in his/her absence.

  • Conduct Fire Department Training: Under direction of the Chief of Training, prepare and deliver assorted training programs and activities for the department. Research training programs, update existing programs, and research new available technology available for tools and equipment. Training programs and activities include, but are not limited to, recruit schools, recruit orientation, fire suppression, medical, special operations, driver/operator, and officer development. Prepare schedules and coordinate attendance of personnel and equipment for activities. Coordinate and supervise activities of Platoon Training Officers as it pertains to training activities. Supervise and evaluate recruits during recruit schools and orientation program to ensure proficiency in proper application of firefighting, special operations, community risk reduction, and medical techniques and procedures. Supervise the delivery of training programs and evaluate performance of Fire Department personnel during training activities.

  • Ensure Currency and Effectiveness of Training Programs: Assist the Chief of Training to evaluate the effectiveness of the training program to achieve departmental goals. Evaluate new fire suppression equipment and training practices to ensure compliance with regulatory standards. Assist with periodic department training needs analysis to identify instructional needs.   • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience as a Lieutenant or higher.
  • NIMS ICS or a NFA course meeting NIMS ICS (100, 200 & 700).
  • ICS-300 & ICS-400.
  • IFSAC/Pro Board FF II.
  • Current CPR.
  • SCFA EVDT & Pump Operations or equivalent IFSAC/Pro Board Driver/Operator certification.
  • SCFA Basic Aerial Operations or equivalent IFSAC/Pro Board certification.
  • IFSAC/Pro Board Fire Instructor I.
  • IFSAC/Pro Board Fire Officer II.
  • At least two (2) years of verifiable experience in delivering firefighter and driver operator training programs.
  • National Registry EMT within one (1) year of employment.
  • IFSAC/Pro Board Fire Instructor II within one (1) year of employment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Fire Officer (FO) designation through the Center for Public Safety Excellence (CPSE).
  • IFSAC/Pro Board Fire Instructor II.
Driver's License Requirements
  • Valid South Carolina Class E or Class F Driver's License or optional South Carolina Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL), or the equivalent CDL from their state of residence.
  • For those with an equivalent CDL from their state of residence, please be advised: Applicants who do not intend to relocate to South Carolina, must reside in a neighboring state (Georgia or North Carolina) and must meet the same CDL requirements as residents of South Carolina. In addition, employees residing in a neighboring state are required to provide to the City of Greenville an annual Motor Vehicle Record from their state's Department of Motor Vehicles at the sole cost of the employee.

  • Operate general office equipment to include scanner, printer, copier, telephone, and computer with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Utilize specialized software and systems to include GIS software, timekeeping software, public safety records management software, and other associated software.
