Fire Department Hiring information

Can an epileptic be a firefighter?

Firefighters must meet physical and medical standards, and having epilepsy can be a disqualifying condition due to safety concerns and the physical demands of the job. Candidates with epilepsy typically need to provide medical clearance and may be required to demonstrate seizure control before qualifying for employment. Each department's policies vary, so it's important to consult specific hiring guidelines.

Is 27 too late to be a firefighter?

Firefighter hiring standards typically do not specify an upper age limit, and many departments accept applicants in their late 20s or older. Candidates usually need to meet physical fitness, education, and certification requirements such as EMT or firefighter training, regardless of age. Age should not be a barrier if the applicant can meet the job's physical and training demands.

Can a firefighter be on blood thinners?

Firefighters are typically required to pass physical and medical evaluations, which may include assessing medication use. Being on blood thinners can affect a firefighter's ability to perform certain duties safely, especially in emergency situations involving injuries or bleeding, and medical clearance may be necessary before employment. It is important to disclose medication use during the medical exam and consult with a healthcare professional and the hiring department for specific policies.

How much does the fire department pay per hour?

Firefighters in the fire department typically earn between $15 and $30 per hour, depending on experience, location, and rank. Entry-level positions may start at the lower end, while experienced firefighters or those with specialized skills can earn higher wages. Overtime and shift differentials can also increase overall pay.
