Job Description
General Statement of Duties
Performs responsible fire suppression and incident response activities including operating fire apparatus and participating in firefighting.
Distinguishing Features of the Class
An employee in this class participates in the operations of fire suppression, incident response personnel, and operations at the fire station. The employee participates in incident response, including emergency medical service, operation of fire apparatus, firefighting, technical rescue, hazardous materials response/mitigation, and equipment and facilities maintenance. The employee also participates in incidence response and fire suppression training. Work requires that the employee stay abreast of state-of-the-art fire suppression and rescue procedures, techniques, and equipment, and requires the employee to incorporate the necessary changes into in-service training. The ability to make effective decisions under pressure is required in all aspects of work, particularly in operating apparatus during fire response. The employee is subject to the hazards associated with incidence response work including working in inside and outside environments, in extreme hot and cold temperatures, loud noise, vibration, moving parts, high heat, chemicals, fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, oils, wearing respirators, and working in close quarters. The employee is also subject to the final OSHA standards on blood borne pathogens. Work is performed under regular supervision and is evaluated through observation, conferences, and written reports concerning the quality and effectiveness of work completed.
FLSA Status
This is a non-exempt position under the Fair Labor Standards Act and is eligible for overtime and compensatory time in accordance with Town policy.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Responds to alarms and participates in incidence response including firefighting operations, operation of fire apparatus and other equipment as required.
  • Responds to and participates in remediation activities of chemical spills, hazardous materials, and other related incidents.
  • Responds to emergency medical incidents and provides EMT services.
  • Responds to and provides technical rescue services.
  • Drives apparatus to incident scene; properly places apparatus to establish water supply or other needs; ensures proper operation and pressure of hoses; issues equipment and monitors radio traffic for necessary response; returns fire apparatus and related equipment to service after incident response.
  • Inspects station and equipment for proper appearance and condition.
  • Performs maintenance and cleaning of fire apparatus, equipment, station building, hydrants, hose lines, and related facilities, equipment, and supplies.
  • Assists with the preparation of fire reports; participates in special projects as required.
  • Participates in in-service training programs.
  • Participates in fire prevention inspections and pre-incident surveys.
  • May perform special assignments or projects requiring the leadership or coordination of others such as SCBA maintenance and repair, radio equipment maintenance and repair, building maintenance, hydrant maintenance, hose line testing and maintenance, etc.
  • Performs related duties as required.

  • Ability to work irregular hours including weekends, holidays, and extended hours in emergency, disaster, or other situations influenced by workload or staffing difficulties.
  • Ability to sufficiently wear/use any personal protective equipment provided by the Town of Nashville.
  • Ability to effectively deal with personal danger, which may include exposure to hazardous chemicals and materials, fumes and smoke, intense heat, electrical hazards, confined or high workspaces, dangerous animals, extremely loud noises, hazards of emergency driving, hazards associated with traffic control and working in and near traffic, and natural and man-made disasters.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to pass an air consumption test and physical examination as determined by the Town of Nashville's contracted healthcare provider.
  • Ability to maintain mental capacity, which permits quickly making sound decisions and using good judgement, demonstrating intellectual capabilities, assessing the situation at an incident scene, and communicating with others.
  • Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational skills of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, bending, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.
  • Must be able to perform very heavy work exerting more than 100 pounds of force occasionally; and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently; and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move or lift equipment and injured/deceased persons.
  • Ability to maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for making observations, including discerning colors, reading, and writing, and operating assigned equipment.
  • Must possess the visual acuity to size up the color, volume, and extent of fire involvement at fire scenes, to operate heavy fire apparatus in emergency situations, and to prepare records and reports.
Desirable Education and Experience
  • Graduation from high school supplemented by completion of courses and seminars in fire service, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Special Requirements
  • Must be able to meet and maintain vehicle insurability with the Town of Nashville.
  • Must be able to wear proper safety equipment as determined by the Fire Chief in accordance with established OSHA regulations.
  • Must possess a valid class B North Carolina driver's license upon appointment.
  • Must possess the following certifications upon appointment:

401(k) supplemental retirement benefits are provided to all full-time employees with no employee contribution required. The Town of Nashville contributes 3% of an employee's salary if they are a general employee and contributes 5% for law enforcement employees.
457(b) supplemental retirement benefits are also available for all employees. The Town does not contribute to this plan on behalf of the employees.
