Fire Alarm System Designer

Job Post Summary

Experienced Fire Alarm System Designer responsible for designing commercial fire alarm systems and producing code compliant drawings and calculations. The role requires strong knowledge of NFPA 72, California Fire Code, California Building Code, and related standards. The position also serves as a technical resource for project teams, reviews design work, coordinates with project stakeholders, and supports quality control and design standards.

Job Roles and Responsibilities
  • Design commercial fire alarm systems in compliance with NFPA 72, California Fire Code, California Building Code, and applicable codes and standards

  • Prepare complete fire alarm shop drawings

  • Prepare battery calculations and voltage drop calculations

  • Develop equipment layouts and system designs

  • Review and quality check CAD drawings and work prepared by drafters

  • Ensure designs meet applicable codes and company standards

  • Serve as a technical resource for fire alarm design and code requirements

  • Provide technical guidance to Project Managers, Estimators, Sales, and Operations

  • Assist with fire alarm equipment selection and value engineering

  • Coordinate with AHJs, engineers, architects, electrical contractors, and project stakeholders

  • Interpret architectural, electrical, mechanical, and structural plans

  • Stay current with fire alarm code updates and manufacturer changes

  • Help develop and improve company design standards and best practices

  • Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior team members

Qualifications and Certifications
  • Extensive commercial fire alarm system design experience

  • Strong knowledge of NFPA 72

  • Strong knowledge of California Fire Code and California Building Code

  • Experience with commercial fire alarm systems

  • Experience with fire alarm manufacturers such as Notifier, Silent Knight, Gamewell FCI, Edwards, Siemens, or similar

  • Strong understanding of initiating devices, notification appliances, control equipment, voice evacuation, and fire alarm networking

  • Experience with emergency responder radio communication systems is a plus

  • Ability to read architectural, electrical, mechanical, and structural drawings

  • Proficiency with AutoCAD

  • Experience with fire alarm design software

  • Strong understanding of fire alarm calculations and system layouts

  • Strong communication and organizational skills

  • NICET Level IV Fire Alarm Systems certification strongly preferred
