Job description

About DAT

DAT Freight & Analytics is an award-winning employer of choice and a next-generation SaaS technology company that has been at the leading edge of freight and logistics innovation for nearly five decades. Founded in 1978, DAT operates the largest freight marketplace in North America - processing 250 million+ load posts annually and maintaining one of the largest repositories of freight market transaction data in the world. On a defined path to $1 billion in revenue, DAT deploys a suite of software solutions, machine learning models, and intelligent automation tools that help brokers, carriers, and shippers price freight accurately, source capacity, reduce risk, and operate more efficiently. With nearly 700 teammates across offices in Denver, CO; Portland, OR; Seattle, WA; Springfield, MO; Toronto, ON; and Bangalore, India, DAT combines the credibility of a multi-decade market leader with the drive of a company that is not done disrupting the industry it helped build. For more information, visit www.DAT.com

Job Application Deadline: 08/31/2026

The Opportunity

DAT is hiring an Engineering Manager to join Broker Tech, the org building the automation layer that lets brokers price, match, onboard, book, track, and settle freight with far less manual effort - while keeping brokers in control of the decisions that matter most to their business. We're steadily automating the core of the marketplace so brokers can dial up automation at their own pace, shifting their time from chasing one-off spot wins toward managing the relationships they're uniquely good at.

This req will land on one of two pods, depending on org needs at time of hire: Network Management (the trust layer that lets brokers research, qualify, onboard, and monitor carriers) or Broker Success (the orchestration layer behind broker web and posting automation). You'll lead 1-2 engineering teams - a mix of full-time US-based staff and contractor engineers - and own delivery for your team's systems end to end.

What You'll Do

  • Own Delivery: Run sprint planning, backlog refinement, and delivery forecasting for your team(s); hold the team accountable to commitments while managing scope responsibly.
  • Lead the People Side: Run 1:1s, set clear performance expectations, write development-focused reviews, and build individualized growth plans for your FTE staff. Recruit, interview, and hire.
  • Oversee Contractor Teams: Hold contractor engineers to the same delivery and quality bar as FTE staff.
  • Weigh In on Architecture: Provide guidance on design and implementation approach for your team's systems; flag technical and cross-team dependencies before they become blockers.
  • Uphold the Bar: Monitor your team's adherence to DAT Engineering standards and practices; flag gaps and recommend refinements.
  • Partner Across the Org: Work with Product Management to translate roadmap priorities into shipped work. Remove impediments proactively; escalate to your director before it's a fire, not after.
  • Share Knowledge: Make sure no one on your team is a single point of failure.

The Skills and Experience You'll Bring

  • People Management: Direct experience running 1:1s, performance conversations, and hiring - not just leading a project team informally
  • End-to-End Ownership: Demonstrated ability to lead a project or feature from planning through maintenance, with measurable outcomes.
  • Pace Management: Comfortable balancing delivery urgency against team sustainability - both failure modes are on you.
  • Technical Grounding: Enough hands-on background to have an informed opinion on your team's architecture, even if you're not writing production code day to day. (Read: should be able to do basic coding exercises and a system design interview)
  • Track Record: Roughly 8+ years of relevant industry experience is typical for this level. Demonstrated skill matters more than the number, so don't self-select out if your path looks different.

Bonus Skills

  • Network Management: experience with compliance/vetting systems, carrier or vendor risk data, entity-resolution or "trust score" style platforms.
  • Broker Success: experience with marketplace matching/pricing systems, rules engines, or posting/bidding workflows.
  • Domain Background: freight, logistics, marketplace, or fintech experience. - Integrations: experience with TMS integrations, API/webhook governance, or partner onboarding flows.
  • Vendor Management: prior experience managing contractor or outsourced engineering teams specifically, not just distributed FTE teams.

Tech Stack

Node.js / TypeScript, PostgreSQL, GraphQL, React, Kafka, SQS, RabbitMQ, Kubernetes, Terraform, Helm, ArgoCD, Istio, AWS, Datadog

Our Culture

Broker Tech is a collaborative, data-driven org that values ownership, directness, and moving fast on ambiguous problems. Whether you land on the trust-and-compliance side of the house or the posting-and-matching side, you'll find a team focused on shipping automation that brokers actually trust enough to use
