What is a fintech programmer?

Fintech Programmers are software developers who specialize in creating technological solutions for the financial industry. They design, build, and maintain applications related to banking, investments, payments, and other financial services, often using advanced programming languages and frameworks. These professionals work on projects such as mobile banking apps, trading platforms, blockchain technology, and financial data analysis tools. Their expertise helps financial institutions innovate, improve security, and enhance the customer experience in a rapidly evolving digital landscape.

What are some unique challenges fintech programmers face when developing financial applications?

Fintech Programmers often encounter challenges related to ensuring high security and compliance with strict financial regulations while developing applications. They must design systems that can handle sensitive financial data, prevent fraud, and meet industry standards such as PCI DSS or GDPR. Additionally, integrating with legacy banking systems and third-party APIs can be complex, requiring robust error handling and real-time data processing skills. Collaboration with compliance officers, product managers, and QA testers is essential to deliver reliable, secure fintech solutions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a fintech programmer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Fintech Programmer, you need strong programming skills in languages like Python, Java, or C++, along with a solid understanding of financial systems and algorithms, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with financial APIs, blockchain technology, cloud platforms, and tools like SQL databases is typically required, and certifications in areas such as AWS or cybersecurity can be beneficial. Attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and effective communication are vital soft skills for collaborating with cross-functional teams and adapting to regulatory changes. These skills ensure the secure, efficient, and innovative development of financial technology solutions in a rapidly evolving industry.

Job description

Job Summary:
Integrate is a Seattle-based company specializing in program management software for deep tech industries. They are seeking a Backend Engineer to join their engineering team to build and scale the infrastructure layer of their platform, focusing on distributed systems and data management.
Responsibilities:
• Design and scale distributed backend systems handling high-throughput, real-time data across a complex dependency graph
• Own performance profiling and debugging across our Go and Rust services — identify bottlenecks and ship fixes
• Contribute to our data federation architecture, including S3 integration, graduation pipelines, and downstream data services
• Build and evolve gRPC service interfaces and REST/JSON APIs consumed across internal and external surfaces
• Work across SQL and NoSQL data stores — schema design, query optimization, and durability patterns
• Drive infrastructure decisions in collaboration with platform engineers and technical leads
• Instrument, observe, and debug production systems — on-call, root cause analysis, and incident follow-through
Qualifications:
Required:
• 2–5+ years of backend engineering experience, with a focus on distributed or high-availability systems
• Production experience in Go; Python for tooling or data workflows
• Familiarity with gRPC and REST/JSON API design at scale
• Experience with both SQL (PostgreSQL) and NoSQL data stores in production
• Kubernetes in real environments — deployment, scaling, resource management, debugging
• Exposure to cloud infrastructure (AWS, GCP, or Azure), particularly around compute, storage, and data services
• A track record on complex system work: monolith-to-microservice transitions, cloud migrations, data pipelines, or consumer-scale workloads
• Strong debugging instincts — you can read a flame graph, find a bottleneck, and ship a fix
• US person status (including US citizens, U.S. permanent residents, individuals granted U.S. asylum status, or individuals admitted in U.S. refugee status) is a required qualification for this position.
Preferred:
• Experience with gRPC design patterns, binary serialization, or API gateway-layer GraphQL
• Terraform or other IaC tooling is a plus
• Experience with load testing or chaos engineering is a nice addition
• Background in ecommerce, fintech, or other consumer-scale SaaS is helpful but not required
Company:
Ultra-secure project management platform ensuring project integrity with a single real-time source of truth across organizations. Founded in 2022, the company is headquartered in Seattle, USA, with a team of 11-50 employees. The company is currently Early Stage.
