Fintech Programmer information

What is a fintech programmer?

Fintech Programmers are software developers who specialize in creating technological solutions for the financial industry. They design, build, and maintain applications related to banking, investments, payments, and other financial services, often using advanced programming languages and frameworks. These professionals work on projects such as mobile banking apps, trading platforms, blockchain technology, and financial data analysis tools. Their expertise helps financial institutions innovate, improve security, and enhance the customer experience in a rapidly evolving digital landscape.

What are some unique challenges fintech programmers face when developing financial applications?

Fintech Programmers often encounter challenges related to ensuring high security and compliance with strict financial regulations while developing applications. They must design systems that can handle sensitive financial data, prevent fraud, and meet industry standards such as PCI DSS or GDPR. Additionally, integrating with legacy banking systems and third-party APIs can be complex, requiring robust error handling and real-time data processing skills. Collaboration with compliance officers, product managers, and QA testers is essential to deliver reliable, secure fintech solutions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a fintech programmer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Fintech Programmer, you need strong programming skills in languages like Python, Java, or C++, along with a solid understanding of financial systems and algorithms, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with financial APIs, blockchain technology, cloud platforms, and tools like SQL databases is typically required, and certifications in areas such as AWS or cybersecurity can be beneficial. Attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and effective communication are vital soft skills for collaborating with cross-functional teams and adapting to regulatory changes. These skills ensure the secure, efficient, and innovative development of financial technology solutions in a rapidly evolving industry.

As part of Walmart Global Tech, CTS teams set the bar for operational excellence and leverage emerging technologies to support millions of customers, associates, and suppliers worldwide.

Position Summary

Do you have experience in FinTech or supply chain technology and a passion for leading full‑stack engineering teams that solve complex, ambiguous problems at scale? Walmart is building a small but high‑impact team operating at the intersection of Accounts Payable and Supply Chain, focused on identifying and resolving issues early in the inventory lifecycle to ensure accurate and timely supplier payments. The team will rapidly experiment—analyzing data, forming hypotheses, building POCs, and iterating through test‑and‑learn cycles. Successful solutions will be scaled to support Walmart’s global footprint. As a Senior Engineering Manager, you will lead teams building end‑to‑end solutions across UI, backend services, and event‑driven platforms. You’ll combine people leadership, technical depth, and delivery ownership, staying close enough to the technology to guide architectural decisions while empowering teams to execute with speed and quality.

Key Responsibilities Engineering Leadership & Team Development
  • Lead, mentor, and grow a team of full‑stack engineers working across React‑based front ends, Java/Spring Boot services, and Kafka‑driven platforms
  • Create a culture of ownership, engineering excellence, and continuous learning
  • Hire, onboard, and develop talent with clear expectations, feedback, and career growth paths
Full‑Stack Technical Strategy & Architecture
  • Define and evolve the end‑to‑end architecture spanning:
  • Frontend: React.js, TypeScript, modern UI frameworks, and data visualization
  • Backend: Java, Spring Boot, RESTful and event‑driven services
  • Messaging & Streaming: Kafka for real‑time data processing and system decoupling
  • Partner with architects and senior engineers to ensure solutions are scalable, secure, resilient, and cloud‑ready
  • Drive alignment on API design, data contracts, and event schemas across systems
Delivery & Execution
  • Own delivery outcomes across multiple workstreams, balancing rapid experimentation with production‑grade engineering
  • Drive Agile practices including sprint planning, dependency management, and continuous delivery
  • Ensure high standards for code quality, testing, observability, and operational readiness
Cross‑Functional Collaboration
  • Work closely with Product, Data Science, Finance, and Supply Chain stakeholders to translate business problems into technical roadmaps
  • Ensure seamless integration between UI experiences, backend services, analytics platforms, and upstream/downstream systems
  • Communicate progress, tradeoffs, and risks clearly to senior leadership
Innovation & Platform Excellence
  • Champion event‑driven and data‑centric designs using Kafka to improve accuracy, timeliness, and system resilience
  • Encourage experimentation with automation, agent‑based solutions, and intelligent workflows
  • Continuously improve system performance, reliability, and cost efficiency at Walmart scale
What You’ll Bring Leadership & Management
  • 5+ years of experience managing software engineering teams
  • Proven ability to lead teams delivering full‑stack, distributed systems in complex enterprise environments
Technical Depth (Full Stack)
  • 10+ years of overall software engineering experience
  • Strong hands‑on background with:
  • Frontend: React.js, JavaScript/TypeScript, HTML, CSS
  • Backend: Java, Spring Boot, microservices, REST APIs
  • Streaming & Messaging: Kafka or similar event‑streaming platforms
  • Ability to guide architecture, review designs, and unblock teams across the stack
Execution & Collaboration
  • Strong delivery mindset with experience leading cross‑functional initiatives
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
  • Bias for action, high ownership, and comfort operating in ambiguity
Agile & Operational Excellence
  • Experience driving Agile delivery and modern DevOps practices
  • Focus on scalability, performance, security, and long‑term maintainability
Preferred Experiences and Exposures
  • FinTech / Payments / Supply Chain: Accounts payable, reconciliation, inventory, or financial accuracy systems
  • Event‑Driven Architectures: Deep experience designing Kafka‑based workflows and data pipelines
  • Cloud & Platform Services: Experience with cloud‑native deployments, CI/CD, and observability
  • Data & Analytics Integration: Building systems consumed by Data Scientists and Business Analysts
