Fintech Engineer information

What is a Fintech Engineer?

A Fintech Engineer is a technology professional who designs, develops, and maintains software systems and solutions for the financial technology industry. Their work typically involves building applications and platforms for digital banking, payment processing, online lending, investment management, and other financial services. Fintech Engineers often use programming languages like Python, Java, or C++, and they must understand financial regulations, cybersecurity, and emerging technologies such as blockchain and artificial intelligence. They play a crucial role in making financial services more accessible, efficient, and secure.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Fintech Engineer?

To thrive as a Fintech Engineer, you need strong programming abilities (such as Python, Java, or C++), a solid understanding of financial systems, and a relevant degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with fintech platforms, blockchain technology, APIs, and certifications like AWS Certified Solutions Architect or CFA are highly beneficial. Analytical thinking, problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills in this role. These competencies are vital for developing secure, innovative, and compliant financial technology solutions in a rapidly evolving industry.

What are some common challenges Fintech Engineers face when integrating new technologies with legacy banking systems?

Fintech Engineers often encounter difficulties when connecting modern applications to legacy banking infrastructures, which may use outdated programming languages or lack robust APIs. These challenges require creative problem-solving, strong documentation skills, and close collaboration with IT and compliance teams to ensure security and regulatory standards are met. Successfully navigating these integrations not only improves technical proficiency but also builds valuable experience in bridging traditional finance with cutting-edge technology.

How much do fintech engineers make?

Fintech engineers typically earn between $80,000 and $150,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and company size. Senior roles or those with specialized skills in blockchain, cybersecurity, or data analysis can command higher salaries. Compensation may also include bonuses, stock options, and benefits.

Is fintech a high paying career?

Fintech engineers typically earn above-average salaries compared to other technology roles due to the specialized skills required, such as programming, data analysis, and knowledge of financial regulations. Compensation varies based on experience, location, and company size, but many fintech roles offer competitive pay and benefits. Advanced skills in programming languages like Python or Java and certifications can further increase earning potential.

Job description

Job Summary:
Range is building AI-powered wealth management that actually works. They are seeking a Senior Software Engineer who will understand user problems, architect solutions, and deliver high-quality software quickly, using AI to enhance productivity.
Responsibilities:
• Understand the user's problem, architect a solution, and ship it.
• Use AI workflows to move faster alongside the team and customers.
• Define how engineering operates at Range by figuring out what's possible when a great engineer leans into AI.
• Produce high-quality, impactful work that drives team success.
• Take full ownership — proactively identify and address challenges while staying focused on solutions.
• Lead by example with positivity, reframing setbacks as opportunities to learn and grow.
• Collaborate openly through radical transparency, ensuring alignment and trust among teammates and stakeholders.
Qualifications:
Required:
• Deep expertise in TypeScript, JavaScript, Python, or other programming languages
• Extensive experience designing, building, and operating production systems on AWS or similar cloud platforms (EC2, ECS, RDS, DynamoDB, S3, CloudWatch)
• Proven ability to work across the stack — frontend, backend, infrastructure — and make sound tradeoffs between them
• Track record of leading technical projects that span multiple services or systems
• Experience defining technical direction for a team, including architecture decisions, tooling choices, and engineering standards
• Proven ability to architect, debug, and ship using AI development tools (Claude Code, Cursor, etc.) — not just prompting, but knowing when the output is wrong, why, and how to fix it
• Strong communication skills — you can align engineers and stakeholders around a technical approach
Preferred:
• Experience designing scalable, high-availability distributed systems
• Experience building and maintaining complex web applications with React and TypeScript at scale
• Excellent product instincts — you partner with product and design to shape what gets built, not just how
• Ability to take a loosely defined business problem and drive it to a well-scoped technical solution
• Track record of raising the bar for engineering quality across a team (testing practices, observability, incident response)
• Security engineering experience
• Fintech experience
• Startup experience
Company:
Range is an AI wealthtech platform that provides wealth management and financial advisory services. Founded in 2020, the company is headquartered in Mclean, USA, with a team of 51-200 employees. The company is currently Growth Stage.
