What is a FinOps engineer?

FinOps Engineers are professionals who specialize in cloud financial management, helping organizations optimize their cloud spending and improve budgeting, forecasting, and cost allocation. They work closely with engineering, finance, and operations teams to implement best practices for cloud usage and cost control. Their goal is to ensure that cloud investments deliver maximum business value by balancing performance, cost, and innovation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a FinOps engineer?

To thrive as a FinOps Engineer, you need a solid understanding of cloud computing, financial analysis, and cost optimization, often supported by a background in computer science, finance, or cloud certifications. Familiarity with cloud platforms (such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud), cost management tools, and data analytics systems is essential. Strong problem-solving, cross-functional collaboration, and effective communication skills set top performers apart in this role. These skills are crucial for managing cloud spending efficiently and enabling organizations to maximize value from their cloud investments.

How does a FinOps engineer typically collaborate with engineering and finance teams to optimize cloud spending?

Job description

Staff Software Engineer, Cloud Infrastructure

As a Staff Software Engineer, Cloud Infrastructure, you will own Ripple's cloud platform strategy across Azure and AWS โ€” defining the reference architectures, governance policies, and engineering standards that enable teams to build and ship reliably at scale. You will sit at the intersection of engineering, security, product, and finance to drive FinOps practices, lead technical build reviews, and ensure infrastructure is built into the solution lifecycle from day one. Beyond the technical, you will mentor engineers, shape hiring, and serve as the principal authority teams turn to when platform decisions matter most.

Responsibilities
  • Take ownership of and lead the cloud infrastructure platform strategy and multiโ€‘quarter roadmap across engineering teams.
  • Serve as the principal infrastructure authority on platform architecture, cloud patterns, and engineering standards.
  • Define reference architectures and reusable infrastructure models that empower engineering teams to build and ship reliably at scale.
  • Partner with product and engineering leadership to ensure infrastructure capabilities are built early in the solution lifecycle.
  • Take responsibility for the security stance of the cloud infrastructure platform in collaboration with the security team.
  • Define and enforce cloud governance policies, tagging standards, access controls, and architectural guardrails.
  • Take responsibility for FinOps methods related to the cloud platform, delivering insights and suggestions to engineering and finance leadership.
  • Build and maintain productionโ€‘quality internal platform tooling and automation across Azure and AWS.
  • Direct the assessment and incorporation of new infrastructure technologies, take part in the onโ€‘call rotation, and apply production experience to guide platform enhancements.
  • Proactively identify and resolve technical conflicts and priority misalignments across teams; lead technical build reviews.
  • Guide senior and midโ€‘level engineers, take an active role in the hiring process, and foster a culture of knowledge sharing.
Qualifications
  • Handsโ€‘on proficiency in Infrastructure as Code, especially Terraform.
  • Strong software engineering skills with proficiency in Python, Go, PowerShell, and/or Bash.
  • Proven experience owning cloud security and governance in a regulated environment.
  • Demonstrated experience leading FinOps practices and communicating findings to leadership.
  • Track record of defining and accomplishing multiโ€‘quarter infrastructure roadmaps.
  • Experience serving as a principal technical authority and setting engineering standards.
  • Excellent communication and influencing skills.
  • Experience taking part in onโ€‘call rotations and applying that exposure to guide platform decisions.
  • A strong approach to mentorship and talent development.
  • Ideally, experience in financial services or another highly regulated industry.
Salary (NY)

Annual Base Salary Range: $196,000 โ€“ $245,000 USD (excluding equity and additional compensation).

Benefits
  • Competitive salary, bonuses, and equity.
  • Benefits covering physical and mental healthcare, retirement, family formation, and family support.
  • Employee giving match.
  • Mobile phone stipend.
  • R & R days to rest and recharge.
  • Generous wellness reimbursement and weekly onsite & virtual programming.
  • Generous vacation policy.
  • Industryโ€‘leading parental leave policies and family planning benefits.
  • Fully stocked kitchens with premium snacks/beverages, catered lunches, and fun events.
