What are FinOps Engineers?

FinOps Engineers are professionals who specialize in cloud financial management, helping organizations optimize their cloud spending and improve budgeting, forecasting, and cost allocation. They work closely with engineering, finance, and operations teams to implement best practices for cloud usage and cost control. Their goal is to ensure that cloud investments deliver maximum business value by balancing performance, cost, and innovation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a FinOps Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a FinOps Engineer, you need a solid understanding of cloud computing, financial analysis, and cost optimization, often supported by a background in computer science, finance, or cloud certifications. Familiarity with cloud platforms (such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud), cost management tools, and data analytics systems is essential. Strong problem-solving, cross-functional collaboration, and effective communication skills set top performers apart in this role. These skills are crucial for managing cloud spending efficiently and enabling organizations to maximize value from their cloud investments.

What is the difference between Finops Engineer vs Cloud Engineer?

Finops Engineers focus on managing and optimizing cloud costs, working closely with finance and operations teams. Cloud Engineers build and maintain cloud infrastructure. While both roles require cloud platform knowledge, Finops Engineers specialize in cost management, making them distinct yet complementary roles in cloud environments.

How does a FinOps Engineer typically collaborate with engineering and finance teams to optimize cloud spending?

A FinOps Engineer acts as a bridge between engineering and finance teams by translating technical cloud usage data into actionable financial insights. They often participate in regular meetings with both groups to review cloud costs, identify optimization opportunities, and set budgetary controls. This role requires clear communication to ensure that engineering teams can maintain performance while finance teams achieve cost visibility and predictability. FinOps Engineers also help establish and enforce best practices for tagging, resource allocation, and forecasting to support collaborative decision-making.

Job description

We are looking for a Staff Engineer, FinOps & Cost Platform to build and lead our engineering cost-management capability. This is a founding individual contributor role focused on improving visibility, understanding, and optimization across all engineering-controlled spend, including cloud infrastructure and engineering-owned technical vendors.

You will build the systems, tooling, and data models required to make engineering spend attributable, explainable, and actionable. In the near term, you will drive measurable savings. Over time, you will help build showback, chargeback, and unit-cost capabilities that allow us to understand the cost of services, platforms, and customer footprint more deeply.

What You'll Do
  • build the internal cost platform and reporting model for engineering spend
  • own analysis and optimization of AWS and engineering-owned vendor spend
  • improve cost attribution, tagging, and data quality
  • define and implement showback, chargeback, and unit-cost models
  • partner with engineering teams to drive optimization opportunities
  • partner with finance and procurement on forecasting, renewals, and vendor rationalization
  • design telemetry-backed cost models that connect infrastructure spend to real usage
  • establish governance, review cadences, and cost-aware engineering practices
What We're Looking For
  • strong infrastructure or platform engineering background
  • deep experience with AWS or comparable cloud environments
  • proven experience with cost optimization, capacity economics, or FinOps-like work
  • strong analytical and data-modeling ability
  • hands-on experience building tooling, dashboards, or internal platforms
  • ability to influence cross-functional stakeholders without direct authority
  • strong communication across technical and business audiences
Nice to Have
  • experience with CloudZero, Apptio, CloudHealth, or similar platforms
  • showback or chargeback experience
  • telemetry or unit-cost modeling experience
  • engineering-vendor utilization and cost-governance experience
  • prior experience building a new internal capability from scratch
