About the Role:

The Maintenance Technician I plays a critical role in ensuring the operational efficiency, safety, and overall appearance of transportation facilities across Virginia. This position combines hands-on building maintenance and repair with grounds upkeep, light construction, painting, and general aesthetic care of the property. In addition to performing maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair tasks on mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and structural systems, the technician keeps interior and exterior spaces clean, functional, and presentable. The technician collaborates closely with facility management and other departments to implement preventive maintenance programs, complete improvement and build-out projects, and respond promptly to urgent repair needs. By maintaining compliance with safety regulations and company standards, the role contributes to a secure, productive, and well-maintained work environment that reflects positively on the organization.

Minimum Qualifications:


  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in facility/building maintenance, grounds maintenance, general construction, or a related hands-on trade.
  • Practical carpentry, painting, and general repair skills, with the ability to complete construction and finishing tasks to a clean, professional standard.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, blueprints, and schematics.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to multiple facility locations as required.
  • Ability to perform physical work, including lifting, climbing ladders, and working outdoors in varying weather conditions.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated construction, framing, drywall, or finish carpentry experience.
  • Heavy Equipment Operation Experience
  • Experience with landscaping and grounds maintenance (mowing, trimming, seasonal upkeep, irrigation, snow/debris clearing).
  • Painting experience (surface preparation, interior and exterior application, finishing).
  • Familiarity with computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS).
  • Knowledge of OSHA regulations and safety best practices.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform routine and complex maintenance and repair tasks on HVAC, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, and structural systems within the facility.
  • Maintain the grounds and exterior of the property, including landscaping upkeep, walkways, parking areas, signage, and seasonal care, to keep the site clean, safe, and presentable.
  • Complete light construction and build-out projects such as framing, drywall, carpentry, installations, and structural repairs.
  • Perform painting and finishing work, including surface preparation and interior/exterior application, to maintain a clean and professional appearance throughout the facility.
  • Diagnose and repair equipment malfunctions promptly to reduce operational disruptions.
  • Conduct regular inspections and preventive maintenance to identify potential issues before they escalate.
  • Maintain the overall aesthetics of the buildings and grounds, addressing wear, damage, and general upkeep proactively.
  • Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, repairs, and parts inventory.
  • Collaborate with vendors and contractors for specialized repairs, construction, and upgrades as needed.
  • Ensure compliance with all safety protocols and regulatory requirements during maintenance, construction, and grounds activities.
  • Assist in facility improvement projects and support emergency response efforts when necessary.
