Position Summary: Support the teachers in providing a well-organized and smooth-functioning instructional program; assist non-English and limited-English speaking students in understanding concepts and completing assignments. Encourage students to become proficient in English and other subject areas through interaction and individual language support.
Reports To: Teacher
Knowledge, Skills & Implementation
  • Follows the school calendar, present for all student days, 29 hours per week
  • Assists the teacher by effectively supporting English Learners (ELs) and Multilingual Learners (MLLs), bridging the gap between a student's current language proficiency and the academic content through individual and small group settings.
  • The Instructional Assistant shall reinforce concepts presented by the teacher.
  • Assists with lessons and activities to meet the individual needs of EL students in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in collaboration with the EL teacher.
  • Assists in obtaining pertinent information for record keeping of EL programs for completion of district or other required reports.
  • Participates in appropriate professional development, workshops, and conferences as directed by the EL teacher.
  • Maintains a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality.
  • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations.
  • Assists the teacher in implementing and maintaining classroom discipline as directed by Whitko policies.
  • The employee shall remain free of any alcohol or non-prescribed controlled substances abuse in the workplace throughout his/her employment in the corporation.
  • Performs other tasks as assigned by the teacher, principal and other administrative staff as designated by the superintendent

Qualifications & Requirements
  • High school diploma
  • Associate's degree or 48 semester hours from an accredited college preferred
  • Six months to one year of experience working with EL children preferred
  • Alternatives to the above qualifications, as the Board of Education may find appropriate, such as Work-Based Learning
