What is a financial software developer internship?

A Financial Software Developer Internship is a temporary position designed for students or recent graduates to gain hands-on experience in developing software applications for the finance industry. Interns typically work with technologies such as databases, programming languages, and financial modeling tools to build or improve software used by banks, investment firms, or fintech companies. The internship provides exposure to both software engineering and financial concepts, helping interns understand how technology supports financial operations and decision-making. Interns often collaborate with experienced developers and analysts, learning industry best practices and building skills relevant for future careers in financial technology.

What types of projects and technologies do financial software developer interns typically work on during their internship?

Financial Software Developer Interns often contribute to projects involving the development and maintenance of applications used for trading, risk management, or financial data analysis. Interns typically work with programming languages such as Python, Java, or C++, and may use frameworks and tools like SQL databases, REST APIs, and cloud platforms. The work environment is usually collaborative, with interns paired with senior engineers and product teams to solve real-world financial problems. This hands-on experience not only improves technical skills but also provides insight into industry-specific challenges and workflows.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a financial software developer intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Financial Software Developer Intern, you typically need a solid understanding of programming languages like Python, Java, or C++, and a background in computer science, mathematics, or finance. Familiarity with financial databases, APIs, version control systems (such as Git), and frameworks like React or Angular is often required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective teamwork and communication skills help interns excel. These competencies are crucial for developing reliable, efficient financial software solutions and collaborating within fast-paced, multidisciplinary teams.

Job description

Developers have the opportunity to work on problems at all levels of the software stack. Whether it's low-level code for driving network hardware, high-performance trading infrastructure that runs without fail, or time-saving internal tools, you'll be writing production code from day one.
Because you work alongside the people using the systems you build, it's easy to get feedback. You'll quickly see the impact of your code and how it improves people's daily work. This also means that the development team enjoys great flexibility when planning roadmaps and deciding which features to implement.
Desired Skills and Requirements
  • BS in Computer Science or Computer Engineering (or equivalent experience)
  • Proficient in C/C++, Python, and/or Java / C#
  • 0-5 years professional experience, but at least 5 years experience programming.
  • Comfortable in Linux
  • Interest in finance / machine learning / big data and/or robotics are pluses

We will provide a lot of on the job training with projects tailored to your skill set.
