At the University of New Mexico Foundation, we believe philanthropy has the power to transform lives, strengthen communities, and expand opportunity across New Mexico. As we advance Accelerate New Mexico, our bold campaign to create lasting impact through education, research, health, innovation, and student success, we are seeking a strategic and values-driven Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to help shape the future of our organization.

This is more than a finance leadership role — it is an opportunity to steward resources that fuel transformational change and ensure the Foundation’s long-term sustainability and impact.

Reporting directly to the President & CEO, the CFO serves as an integral member of the executive leadership team, providing strategic financial vision, trusted counsel, and operational leadership to support the Foundation’s mission and growth.

Why This Role Matters

The CFO plays a critical role in advancing the Foundation’s mission by ensuring financial strength, transparency, and stewardship. This leader will collaborate across the organization and with University partners to guide financial strategy, manage investments and risk, support philanthropic growth, and help drive enterprise-wide decision-making.

The successful candidate will embody our ExCITE Core Values:

Integrity

Ensure financial transparency, regulatory compliance, ethical decision-making, and stewardship of donor resources.

Tenacity

Lead through complexity and change with resilience, strategic thinking, and a focus on sustainable outcomes.

Engagement

Foster a culture of mentorship, accountability, inclusion, and meaningful connection across teams and stakeholders.

  • Partner with colleagues on gift administration, donor restrictions, and philanthropic financial modeling
  • Develop key financial dashboards and metrics to support strategic and Board decision-making
  • Lead and mentor a high-performing finance team
  • Drive continuous improvement in financial systems, reporting tools, and operational processes

What We’re Looking For

We seek a collaborative and visionary financial executive with:

  • Proven success in senior finance leadership (CFO, Controller, or equivalent)
  • Deep expertise in accounting, financial strategy, and organizational stewardship
  • Experience with complex investment portfolios, including public and private equity
  • Strong understanding of GAAP, GASB, audits, tax compliance, and internal controls
  • Exceptional communication and relationship-building skills
  • Experience working with governing boards and executive leadership
  • A leadership style grounded in collaboration, mentorship, and accountability
  • A passion for mission-driven work and organizational impact

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field
  • CPA certification required
  • Minimum 10 years of progressive finance and accounting leadership experience
  • Experience with financial reporting, forecasting, budgeting, tax filings, audits, and compliance
  • Experience supervising and developing teams

Preferred: Master’s degree and experience in nonprofit organizations, higher education, foundations, or endowment management.

Compensation

Salary Range: $177,900 – $227,800
