Job description

Title: Finance Manager

Location: Administrative Office Meridian - Finance Department (on-site)

City: Bellingham, WA

Position: Full-time 40 hours, Monday - Friday 8:00am to 4:30pm, exempt (salary)

Compensation: The salary scale is $87,746 - $129,279 annually (based on 1.0 FTE). Placement within the range is determined by an evaluation of the candidate’s background, education and experience.

Job Summary: The Finance Manager is responsible for the day-to-day management and oversight of the Finance Department and the organization’s accounting operations. This position supports the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) in maintaining accurate financial records, ensuring strong internal controls, and producing timely financial reporting.

The Finance Manager oversees departmental staff responsible for accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger accounting, payroll coordination, and financial reporting. The role ensures financial transactions are processed accurately and in compliance with organizational policies, healthcare regulations, and applicable accounting standards.

In a clinician-owned practice environment, the Finance Manager also supports the financial operations of individual clinics by providing accurate financial reporting, assisting with financial analysis, and ensuring appropriate allocation of expenses and revenues that affect clinic performance and clinician compensation.

Essential Job Functions:

Department Leadership & Staff Management

  • Manages the daily operations of the Finance Department, including oversight of accounting staff across multiple functional tiers.
  • Provides leadership, direction, and coaching to department staff, including hiring, training, performance management, and professional development.
  • Establishes departmental workflows, priorities, and performance expectations to ensure efficient and accurate financial operations.
  • Promotes collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement within the Finance Department.
  • Conducts employee evaluations and provides ongoing feedback and development support.

Financial Operations & Accounting Oversight

  • Oversees core accounting functions including accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger activity, cash management, and payroll accounting.
  • Ensures accurate and timely processing of financial transactions and reconciliations.
  • Collaborates with the CFO to manage the monthly financial close process including review of journal entries, reconciliations, and supporting schedules.
  • Maintains and strengthens internal accounting controls to safeguard organizational assets.
  • Ensures financial practices comply with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), healthcare regulatory requirements, and organizational policies.

Clinic Financial Reporting & Clinician Support

  • Supports the financial operations of clinics and departments by ensuring accurate reporting of clinic revenues, expenses, and financial performance.
  • Assists the CFO in preparing and reviewing monthly financial statements and clinic-level financial reports.
  • Ensures appropriate allocation of shared expenses, overhead costs, and other financial transactions impacting clinic profitability.
  • Provides financial information and analysis to support clinician-associates, clinician-owners, and management in understanding clinic performance and operational financial results.
  • Assists with the preparation and review of clinician distribution and compensation calculations as directed by the CFO.

Financial Reporting & Analysis

  • Assists the CFO in preparing monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements including balance sheets, income statements, and variance analyses.
  • Analyzes financial data and operational trends to support leadership decision-making.
  • Assists with financial modeling and operational financial analysis as requested by the CFO.
  • Prepares financial reports and supporting documentation for leadership, board members, lenders, and regulatory agencies.

Audit, Compliance, and Regulatory Reporting

  • Coordinates preparation of financial documentation for annual external audits and financial reviews.
  • Assists with preparation of tax documentation and required financial filings.
  • Supports compliance with healthcare financial reporting requirements including Medicare and Medicaid reporting where applicable.
  • Maintains appropriate documentation to support financial audits and regulatory compliance.

Organizational Collaboration

  • Works closely with leadership across departments to support financial operations and resolve accounting issues.
  • Serves as a resource to managers and leaders regarding financial processes, policies, and reporting.
  • Maintains effective working relationships with co-workers, auditors, financial institutions, vendors, and other external partners.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Assists the CFO with financial projects, operational initiatives, and process improvements.
  • Participates in the development and implementation of financial policies and procedures.
  • Performs other duties assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

  • Strong knowledge of financial accounting principles, financial reporting, and internal controls.
  • Knowledge of healthcare financial operations, including clinician practice accounting preferred.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to interpret complex financial data.
  • Proficiency with accounting systems, financial software, and Microsoft Excel.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to supervise, mentor, and develop staff.

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field, or equivalent knowledge and skills obtained through a combination of education, training, and experience.
  • 8+ years of direct progressive accounting or finance experience, preferably in a healthcare organization, demonstrating continued growth, professional development and subject matter expertise, with at least 6 years in a leadership or supervisory role.
  • Experience with clinician practice accounting, clinic financial reporting, or multi-location healthcare organizations strongly preferred.
  • CPA or other relevant financial certifications strongly preferred.

Work Environment:

This position operates in a professional office environment with routine travel to clinic locations as needed. The Finance Manager may be required to work outside standard office hours to address urgent matters or attend events.

Physical Requirements:

Performing the duties of this job requires ability to: stand; walk; sit; climb stairs; use hand to finger coordination, handle or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; balance, stoop, kneel, crouch; talk or hear. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds. Specific vision abilities include: close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust and focus.
