Meijer offers an 11-week internship program that challenges interns to deliver innovative solutions to real projects that impact the business. Throughout the course of the internship experience, we deliver diverse personal and professional development opportunities that further develop skillsets that can be implemented both during and after the program. The internship program will allow for interaction with other interns and Meijer senior leaders.

Meijer’s Store Leadership Internship will build a foundation of retail knowledge and expose participants to store leadership opportunities.  The internship experience is the first step in an accelerated pathway to additional store leadership roles.  Interns that convert into a fulltime role with Meijer will participate in structured development programs and leadership rotations to build leadership capabilities and retail business acumen.  For those with a desire to excel, who demonstrate high leadership potential and a passion for the values that make Meijer successful, a Store Director Position may be only 5-6 years away. Store Directors at Meijer lead a multimillion dollar/year business, with several hundred team members, and potential to earn over six figures in salary and bonus. 

During the first half of the Store Leadership Internship, participants will receive a foundation of retail knowledge and leadership competencies.  In the second half of the internship, participants will apply what they have learned in an official leadership role as an Intern Team Leader where they will be responsible for business results, team member engagement, and customer experience.  This will require a flexible schedule such as working some nights and/or weekends.  Conversion to a full-time team member following the internship will be based on interest, performance throughout the internship, and leadership potential. 

Intern Team Leader Job Profile Summary:

Plans, directs and supervises team members in the day-to-day operations within various departments of the store. Serves as the mentor and coach for all team members. Implements strategies to improve customer service, drive store sales while ensuring customer needs are met and service is quick and efficient. Maintains store appearance with a focus on prime shopping hours, product presentation and company standards.

What you will be doing as an Intern Team Leader:

  • Ensure a positive company image by providing courteous, friendly, and efficient service to customers and team members.
  • Support department in achieving sales, maintaining shrink, and managing the P&L.
  • Model exceptional, fast and friendly customer service.
  • Mentor and coach team members to ensure customer service and sales goals are exceeded and the area is maintained to Meijer standards.
  • Mentor and coach new team members to the department and help ensure they are onboarded and completing required training. 
  • Spend majority of time within the store communicating with customers and team members to ensure exceptional service is being delivered.
  • Promote a safe work environment.
  • Reliable and consistent attendance required. 
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • The Meijer Store Leadership Internship is an experiential program designed for students currently enrolled in a Bachelor's degree program, who are considering future careers in this exciting field
  • Ability to work flexible shifts to gain exposure to the full operation of the store
  • Prior experience in retail is preferred, but not required
  • Past leadership responsibilities in work or extracurricular activities strongly preferred
  • Passion for retail and a desire to enter a career in store leadership
  • Drive for results - has focus on the bottom line
  • Customer focus - dedicated to meeting expectations of internal and external customers
  • Relationship Skills - can create positive working relationships with customers, team members, leadership, and other internal and external constituencies
  • Action Oriented: can mange multiple tasks
  • Decision Quality: ability to analyze financial information and/or other data to make informed decisions
  • Effective Communication – can adjust communicate style to ensure clear direction and understanding
