Both roles are essential in finance, but they serve different functions within organizations.

How does a financial analyst typically collaborate with other departments within a company?

Financial Analysts frequently work cross-functionally with teams such as accounting, operations, and marketing to gather data, analyze business performance, and support strategic planning. Regular collaboration ensures that financial models and forecasts are based on accurate, up-to-date information from across the organization. This teamwork is essential for preparing budgets, evaluating investment opportunities, and providing actionable insights to management. Strong communication and relationship-building skills are important for success in these collaborative efforts.

Is it hard to find a job as a financial analyst?

Finding a job as a financial analyst can be competitive, but strong analytical skills, proficiency in Excel and financial modeling, and relevant certifications like CFA or CPA can improve prospects. Entry-level positions are available, but experience and networking often influence hiring success.

How much is the salary of a financial analyst?

The average salary of a financial analyst in the United States typically ranges from $60,000 to $85,000 per year, depending on experience, location, and industry. Entry-level analysts may earn less, while those with advanced certifications or in senior roles can earn over $100,000 annually.

What does a financial analyst do?

A Financial Analyst is responsible for analyzing financial data, preparing reports, and making recommendations to help businesses and individuals make informed investment decisions. They evaluate economic trends, study financial statements, and assess the performance of stocks, bonds, and other types of investments. Financial Analysts often work for banks, investment firms, insurance companies, or corporate finance departments, providing insights that support key financial strategies and planning.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a financial analyst, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Financial Analyst, you need strong analytical abilities, proficiency in financial modeling, and typically a degree in finance, accounting, or a related field. Familiarity with tools such as Microsoft Excel, financial databases (like Bloomberg), and certifications such as CFA or CPA are often required. Attention to detail, effective communication, and problem-solving skills help analysts interpret data and present actionable insights. These abilities are crucial for making informed recommendations that drive sound financial decisions and business growth.

Will AI replace financial analysts?

AI can automate routine tasks such as data analysis and reporting for financial analysts, increasing efficiency. However, financial analysts' roles also require critical thinking, interpretation, and strategic decision-making that AI cannot fully replicate, so the profession is expected to evolve rather than be replaced entirely.

Company rating: 9.2 out of 10

Based on 12 frontline employees who took The Breakroom Quiz

Job description

The Business Line Finance team at Edelman Financial Engines works directly alongside Marketing, Distribution, and Product & Technology partners, translating financial data into context that helps those teams make better decisions. We are always looking for ways to work smarter and faster, whether that's developing a new forecasting model, turning a monthly manual report into an automated dashboard, or digging into a data set to surface something useful before the next business review. If that kind of work sounds interesting, we'd like to talk.

Principal Responsibilities:

The Financial Analyst will report directly to the Financial Analysis Manager and will be responsible for the following:

  • Owning and managing OpEx budgets for business line partners, building, maintaining, and explaining the numbers while proactively identifying variances and cost drivers before they become surprises.
  • Building and maintaining driver-based forecasts for new client inflows, working with business partners to develop and pressure-test the assumptions that underpin those projections.
  • Building and maintaining dashboards and reporting in Power BI that give business partners real-time visibility into financial performance, proactively identifying manual or recurring workflows and replacing them with scalable, automated solutions.
  • Preparing materials for internal leadership and external stakeholders (lenders, PE owners, etc.) that translate complex financial data into clear, decision-ready insights.

Baseline Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, or a related field; 1-3 years of FP&A, business finance, or financial analytics experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively across different functions and effectively influence senior business partners.
  • Strong analytical and financial modeling skills with the ability to work through ambiguity and structure problems independently.
  • Proficient in Excel, financial modeling, and preparing presentations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Background in Financial Services, FinTech, or Wealth Management.
  • Demonstrated use of analytics or BI tools to build something better, faster, or more scalable than what existed, regardless of tool.
  • Hyperion or similar ERP/EPM planning tool experience (e.g., Anaplan, Adaptive Insights, IBM Planning Analytics)

Edelman Financial Engines takes a market-based approach to pay. The expected base salary range for this role nationally is $61,100 - $81,400. However, final base pay will be carefully determined based on several factors, including responsibilities, job-related skills, relevant experience, geographic location, and market conditions. Additionally, this role may be eligible for other forms of compensation and benefits, such as a discretionary bonus, health, dental and other wellness plans, and 401(k) contributions.

Your recruiter can share more about the specific benefits eligible for this role during the hiring process.
