Job Description
The Graduate Assistant for Rec Programs is responsible for supporting program administration, personnel management, and facility oversight for the Fitness and Sport Programs. This position requires the ability to multi-task while maintaining a strong attention to detail.
  • Graduate Assistants are expected to be available to work some nights and weekends.
  • These are 10-month positions beginning in August ending in May, with an option for summer employment.
  • Graduate Assistant positions are one-year appointments, which are evaluated at the end of the first year to be renewed for subsequent years. (Graduate Assistants are responsible for paying fees each semester and must remain in good academic standing to maintain assistantship).

Primary Responsibilities
  • Assist with recruiting, hiring, training, scheduling, supervising, and evaluating a Fitness staff of 25+ and a Sport Program staff of 30+.
  • Serve as Facility Manager of the Campus Recreation Center.
  • Conduct in-service training for fitness and Sports Program Staff.
  • Assist in payroll procedures accurately for 55+ student and contract employees, following university and departmental guidelines.
  • Assist with creating the Intramural Sport and Fitness schedules.
  • Assist with developing and implementing a marketing plan for Fitness and Sport programs.
  • Conduct personal training sessions if necessary (if certified)
  • Assist with regular maintenance, inspection, and upkeep of Fitness and Sports equipment.
  • Create, update, and enforce policies and procedures related to the Fitness and Sport programs.
  • Track and record participation numbers for all programs/areas.
  • Provide onsite supervision for Intramural activities, especially major team sports (Basketball, Flag Football, and Soccer)
  • Manage IMLeagues web-based scheduling and participant registration program for Intramural Sports programming.
  • Assist with the creation and implementation of the Sport Club Officer Training program.
  • Assist with the management of reservations at the Outdoor Field Complex.
  • Assist with CPR training for all Campus Rec Staff.

Graduate Assistants must have completed a Bachelor's degree and been accepted into a graduate program at NKU meeting the minimum qualifications, which vary, depending on the program selected. The successful candidates will be paid $13.25/hr. bi-weekly for up to 25 hours per week with the exception of university holidays and closures (approximately $10,000) with an option for summer employment.
In addition to the financial compensation, Graduate Assistants (GAs) receive a tuition scholarship in the amount of no more than nine (9) hours per semester (fall, spring) of graduate in-state tuition. Graduate students who are assessed tuition at any rate other than in-state will be responsible for the difference. GAs must follow all guidelines set forth by the Financial Aid Office.
Qualifications
  • Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must be responsible and reliable.
  • Prefer 2 years of experience working in a recreation setting.
  • Prefer experience in fitness/personal training and national fitness certifications.
  • Prefer experience in officiating and officials training
  • Attention to detail is a must.
  • Great time management skills.
  • Ability to work independently.
