Quality Control Inspector - 2nd Shift
Midsouth Steel | College Park, GA
Schedule: Monday-Thursday, 3:00 PM-1:30 AM (with mandatory OT as needed)
Position Summary
Midsouth Steel is seeking a detail-oriented Quality Control Inspector to join our fabrication team on second shift. The Quality Control Inspector will work directly in the fabrication shop, overseeing the quality of work performed by our welding and fabrication teams and ensuring finished products meet Midsouth Steel's quality standards, project specifications, and applicable requirements.
This is a hands-on position requiring a strong understanding of structural steel fabrication and welding processes. The ideal candidate will be comfortable working independently in a busy shop environment, reading blueprints and welding symbols, performing dimensional and visual inspections, and maintaining accurate quality documentation.
Key Responsibilities
  • Inspect structural steel and miscellaneous steel fabrication throughout the production process.
  • Monitor welding and fabrication activities to ensure work is performed according to approved drawings, specifications, and Midsouth Steel quality standards.
  • Perform visual inspections of welds and fabricated components and identify defects, deficiencies, or workmanship issues.
  • Verify dimensions, fit-up, orientation, and other fabrication requirements using tape measures and appropriate inspection tools.
  • Read and interpret structural steel fabrication drawings, shop drawings, details, and welding symbols.
  • Work closely with welders, fabricators, foremen, and production management to identify and resolve quality issues.
  • Document inspection results, nonconformances, corrections, and other quality-related information accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Maintain quality control records and assist with documentation control to ensure inspection records are complete and properly maintained.
  • Verify that required inspections and quality checkpoints are completed throughout the fabrication process.
  • Identify recurring quality issues and communicate them to the Quality Manager and appropriate production personnel.
  • Assist with maintaining compliance with applicable project specifications, welding requirements, and Midsouth Steel quality procedures.
  • Support final inspections of completed fabricated components prior to painting, shipping, or delivery.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area while performing inspections.
  • Perform other quality-related duties as assigned by the Quality Manager.
Required Qualifications
  • Ability and willingness to work second shift: Monday-Thursday, 3:00 PM-1:30 AM.
  • Previous experience in structural steel fabrication, welding, or a related manufacturing environment.
  • Ability to accurately read a tape measure and perform dimensional inspections.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, shop drawings, and fabrication details.
  • Familiarity with welding processes, welding terminology, and welding symbols.
  • Strong understanding of structural steel fabrication practices and quality expectations.
  • Strong documentation control and recordkeeping skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to identify discrepancies or workmanship issues.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with welders, fabricators, supervisors, and management.
  • Ability to work independently and make sound decisions regarding quality issues.
  • Ability to work safely in a fast-paced steel fabrication shop environment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous experience as a Quality Control Inspector in structural steel fabrication.
  • Experience inspecting structural steel welds and fabricated components.
  • Familiarity with AISC quality requirements and structural steel inspection practices.
  • AWS or other welding/quality certifications.
  • Experience with inspection documentation, nonconformance reports, and corrective actions.
